Is Tim Williams 1st Team All-Conference?

    First Post Banner
Curious to hear everyone's thoughts... Pre-injury, I think it would have been a no-brainer. Post-injury, I wonder if he'll receive the recognition...

    My conference 1st Team:

    G - Elijah Brown, UNM
    G - Marcus Marshall, NEV
    G -Chandler Hutchinson, BS
    F - Jalen Moore, USU
    F - Cameron Oliver, NEV

    POY, I think it's a three-horse race:

    • Brown
    • Oliver
    • Hutchinson

Coach of the Year: Winning Team
Freshman of the Year: Koby McEwen
Defensive Player of the Year: Cameron Oliver

    FWIW, 2016-17 PRESEASON ALL-MW TEAM
    Elijah Brown, UNM
    Trey Kell, SDSU
    Jalen Moore, USU
    Cameron Oliver, NEV
    Tim Williams, UNM

It would be a travesty if TW wasn't 1st team all-conference. He has proven to be the most reliable offensive weapon the Lobos have and one could make the argument he is the team MVP which makes the latest winning streak even more impressive.
"I was trying to be aggressive," Snell said. "I heard the crowd so I just shot the ball."

Haha, love the Coach of the Year: Winning Team. Too true, you could also argue that for POY.

I'm considering a groan on this one. Can't believe you don't have him on your 1st team.

I think TW definitely deserves to be first team, but I'm not sure who I would replace.....probably either Marshall or Moore. He is absolutely unstoppable one on one. No one person in the conference can guard him which means instant double team(and even that doesn't stop TW) and then he is such a good passer out of the double. I would put Oliver in the same category. I actually think he deserves it more than EB (here comes the groans) because he is more consistent. However EB can absolutely take over games at times as can Marshall and Hutchinson. Moore is consistently good but the lack of a good supporting cast hampers him some. In the end I don't think an injury should affect his chances. He has played enough of the season already to prove his worth.

As of a couple of weeks ago, Marshall was consensus player of the year. 2 weeks can change a lot

I say swap out Oliver and put Tim in his place! In my opinion Oliver has had just an average season. Tim is more consistent even though he's facing a double team every night. Because of shooters like Marshall, Oliver doesn't face a lot of double teams.

I should have clarified -- my anticipated all-conference team.

If I was voting, TW would absolutely be on my 1st team. He's without a doubt the best down-low player in the league. He's the only big-guy that is match-up proof.

My posed question: what does missing ~7 games do to his resume? And maybe does our winning record doing those games affect his 'perceived' impact?

My hope: he comes back for SDSU on Senior Night -- puts up 20 and 10 and solidifies his much-deserved recognition.

    --
All in all, I really think if we can win the league, we'll have POY, COY, and hopefully two 1st teamers.

    I believe. Go Lobos.

Right now I'll go with Blanco's picks for 1st team. I think the only way Williams makes it is the Lobos win the regular season (possible) and Tim Williams returns for the final 2 regular season games (possible).

I'll also give the newcomer award to Marshall. I got killed before the season for not thinking CMac had a shot at this. It had nothing to do with his talent. I just didn't think he'd get enough minutes playing behind a all mwc caliber player like Williams.

He has to come back and finish well. You can't really make the argument if he misses half the conference season, despite his talent.

Double teams? Heck, there’s been several times when he’s got three guys hanging all over him—and he still scores!

He may not win the honors, but hard to make a case that he is not better then them. Everyone in conference knows the talent that he is. Without a doubt the best offensive big man in the league.

All-Conference teams are supposed to be for MWC games only. As much as I think he would make it if he played in the entire MWC schedule, missing almost half of the conference season would make it hard to put him on the list. If he does come back early and plays well, I think he should be included.

my apologies...I meant to refer to his previous game against san diego state...oliver reminds of of unlv's first round top pick who showed up sometimes and was a now show sometimes...and is still a no show sometimes in the NBA...

The bottom line is maybe Tim will or maybe Tim won't. How many MWC games do you need to be considered? Depends on the voters. For the games he has played he is 1st string but then again has he played enough?

It may well be Marshall. Especially if Nevada wins the MW regualar season. However, Marhsall's shot has not been falling as steadily lately and Fenner has been on the rise. I think Marshall has the inside track unless he stays in a funk from 3.

    Others for POY:

If EB finishes strong and the Lobos get a streak going, he's got a shot.
If CSU stays in 1st then Cleavell has a shot. That dude can go off. We can't let him do that at The Pit.
Tim would have to come back sooner than later and finish very strong I believe, perhaps even to make 1st Team All-MW.
Oliver is very very good but I don't know if he's having a MW POY season yet. Maybe he'll earn it late.
Hutchinson is as in the race as anyone else IMO. He's very impressive. Once again, a MW title for Boise would help his chances.

Would Caroline get any votes if he finishes with big stats and Nevada wins the MW?

    Go Lobos
    Go MW

I personally believe that it should go to the best player on the first place team. Whether that is EB, Clavell, Hutch, or Marshall. This however gets tricky we end the year in a 2 or 3 team tie for first place.

I've got mixed feelings on that but I definitely get that a player who leads his team to a championship increases his standing toward POY significantly. The MW tends to lean that way most years as well.

Update on Tim's x-ray just now from Rothstein.

New Mexico's Tim Williams (stress fracture) will remain in boot after today's X-Ray, per Craig Neal. Will be re-evaluated at end of month. (Tweet)

My first team All-Conference (so far):

    G - Elijah Brown, UNM
G - Chandler Hutchison, Boise State
    F - Brandon Clarke, SJSU
    F - Emmanuel Omogbo, CSU
    F - Tim Williams, UNM

    Player of the Year: Omogbo

Elijah is scoring the most in conference, and carrying the team with Tim out. Tim is the only player in this conference that draws a double team almost everytime he touches the ball. That says a lot. But I'm going with Omogbo. He's the only player in the league averaging a double-double in conference play, while still being 7th in scoring.

Defensive Player of the Year: Clarke

This one's easy. Dude's blocking 3 shots a game. Runner ups would be Zylan Cheatham and Omogbo.

So it actually is a stress fracture? Previously it sounded like they were saying stress reaction, which would be pre-fracture.

Is this who you think win MWC honors or just your personal picks? I don't think there is a chance Nevada gets left out of the first team.
