5 Ways to Decrease the Risk for an ACL Injury

I watched the CSU/Wyoming game last night. What was amazing about the injury was that (unlike Jaisa's injury) there didn't appear to be anything awkward about it. She wasn't landing from a jump. She was simply running across the lane to post up on the other side. But she was decelerating when she crumbled to the floor, so there is that aspect mentioned in the previous article.
Without her, Wyoming couldn't guard Nystrom in the 4th quarter. (They couldn't guard Gustavsson the whole game.) But offensively, Wyoming has a lot of depth to replace Roberts. Gomez and Rusk will probably play more minutes. The Wyoming system will go on. But nobody loses their best player and gets better because of it.
It's a tough break for Liv and the team. But unlike the ACL injury to Jordan Kelley last year, it isn't career-ending. She has an opportunity to write another chapter in her career next year. And with Wyoming only losing Ligocki, they should be one of the contenders next year.
Its a terrible break for WYO. Roberts was absolutely driving that team to another level this year. She was scoring from all over the floor, defending and rebounding.
WYO really struggled to score once Roberts went down. CSU outscored them 18-9 from that point on. Part of it was the rest of the team being a bit shell-shocked. But the other part is that they dont have a lot of versatile scorers in their starting line-up. Tapia and Ligocki are guards who rarely score outside the paint. Cotton makes layups. Only Natalie Baker can do damage inside and out and she'll have much less room to operate without Roberts on the floor. She stepped up in the final 5 minutes against CSU and scored 7 of WYO's 4th quarter points. The bench players (Gomez, Rusk) are three-point shooters.
Legurski is a great coach and he'll figure some things out before the season is over. It just might take a little time.
The good news is this is going to be a fun MWC tourney. You probably have 5-6 teams capable of getting hot against a weak field and winning it. The bad news is whoever comes out is probably going to be a 15 seed and their first round game will be a bloodbath.
