Fairchild has 14 kills in UNM's first win in Laramie since 2001
LARAMIE, Wyo. --- The Lobos ended a six-match losing streak in Laramie, Wyo. on Thursday night as the University of New Mexico beat Wyoming, 25-20, 25-20 and 25-13. New Mexico is 14-3 overall and 4-2 in Mountain West Conference competition.
The Lobos took a 9-3 lead to start the match, including a 5-0 run on the serve of Jade Michaelsen. New Mexico capitalized on six Wyoming service errors during the set to get to a 24-16. The Cowgirls held UNM at set point and cut the Lobo lead to 24-20. Anna Lehne pounded one of her three kills in the set to win the set, 25-20.
In the second set New Mexico gradually built the lead, getting to 21-14 on a block by Lehne and Rose Morris for the largest lead of the set. Wyoming cut the Lobo lead to 23-20 before Jeanne Fairchild put up a big block and a kill to get a Lobo win.
New Mexico came out of the intermission on a mission and jumped out to a 5-0 lead. The run gained some momentum on a kick save by Lisa Meeter for a dig that led to a Fairchild kill at 4-0. The Cowgirls cut the Lobo lead to 11-9 before putting the set out of reach. Meeter held serve to a 16-10 lead before Wyoming took its second timeout. The Lobos held a six-point lead to 19-13, before scoring six straight points to win the match, 25-13.
Fairchild led the Lobos with 14 kills, while Lehne had nine kills and six blocks. Michaelsen had 31 assists and Gayle Tripp had 10 digs.
The Lobos continue their I-25 North MWC road trip at Colorado State on Sunday, Oct. 12. Match time on The Mtn. is set for 1 p.m.
