For those who consistently bad mouth Krebs...

    First Post Banner
He has earned his fair share of justifiable criticism but it's really time to back off.

In regards to the ski team and those ho bashed Krebs, here's some quotes from the recent BOR mtg and the acting UNM Pres. himself.

"Krebs, who on April 24 awarded the ski team the Athletic Director’s Cup for having the highest team grade-point average (3.86 combined) in the UNM athletics department, told the Journal he is very happy that the team was reinstated and
he never wanted to cut it in the first place."

“With respect to skiing, Mr. Krebs has received relentless, and in my opinion, undeserved criticism for this decision, even though he was following my directions,” Abdallah said. “This is unfortunate.”

    And this...

"The University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University each showed marked improvement in the APR data released by the NCAA for the 2015-16 academic year — continuing a trend for each. None of either school’s athletic programs incurred a penalty for failure to meet minimum standards. The schools had a combined 14 programs score a perfect 1,000 for ’15-16."

I agree 100% Jeff. APR not withstanding, the Weir hire will be the litmus test for Krebbie's legacy.

If Krebs was effective, they would not have cut skiing in the first place. If the guy deserves criticism, he'll get it. Requesting others to 'back off' is asinine.

Someone please explain to me what he has done wrong other than the hire of Mike Locksley?

Thats pretty much it. But it was a BIG one. Really bad timing with conference realignment in the balance.

Yeah, but he didn't know it was going to be a train wreck. Locksley was a hot up-and-coming coach that several programs were considering. It was even considered a coup in football circles that UNM was able to snag him. So, yeah, hindsight is 20/20.

His name was surfacing all over the country. He was hoping to give him his first shot the same way he initially hired Urban Meyer at Bowling Green. The Noodles hire didn't work out, but at the time that was a no brainer as well. Funny how people are up in arms lately towards Krebs, but go back to 2013 when he made that hire. There wasn't much to question.

Krebs big mistake was Locksley. Other than that he has done a pretty good job. He redeemed himself of the Locksley hire with the hiring of Davie. You can criticize the hire of Neal but he really had very little choice. Almost all of us thought the Neal hire was a no-brainer.

So now we have two threads on here that were intended to help Krebs, but actually give him what would be thought of as bad press. These titles will come up in Google searches, and some people draw their conclusions on such searches.

Time to stop amplifying the message of the Krebs curmudgeons.

it has not been all "peaches and cream" for Krebs but he is doing the best he can with all the political pull by Gov. in SF... we have all worked jobs where some decisions are out of our control.

I'd bet that we are going to be more than mildly envious at the results Dayton's $72 million investment in their basketball arena will bring them.

Krebs came in when the design of the Pit was already set. He had nothing to do with it. He just had to make sure and follow through with it.

Krebs has brought the athletic department to be 80% self funded. Only 20% comes from the School and the state. That is huge. Under Rudy D we were more like the other way around. We have a $44 Million budget for athletics. Check the other schools in the conference and see how they do financially. All are in the hole millions and we were in the hole about $1.5 and people act like we are criminals. That's how Athletics works. Go check and see if any school is as financially stable as we are in athletics. I think Michigan is in the hole over $100 million. Just saying.

Academics are at an all time high. We are at the top or near the top in the Learfield Cup Standings for a Non P5 school. Our football program is producing wins like never before. Rocky never had 2 consecutive seasons with this many wins. I love Rocky. We keep getting donations for remodeling the baseball field. We have sold naming rights to bring in big bucks to the school.

If we don't have a significant Coach's buyout in the contract then we won't get a good coach. That is a fact. You pay a coach $600,000 and that's what you get. If you pay a coach over $1 Million then that's what you will get if your lucky. It didn't work out for Neal but you get what you pay for. By the way I like Weir.

I could not stand Paul Krebs when he first got here. His accomplishments and record have won me over. And he is not overpaid either. The facts are the facts. Numbers don't lie.

    These two items.

I wasn't a Krebs hater but wasn't a fan either. I have come to appreciate him a little more. Locksley was a mess but most AD's don't have a completely spotless record.
That's just the way it goes.

So this is another example of a Vice President that can't make decisions without having his boss dictate direction.

In other words, Krebs is wasting a lot of money by taking a salary, blowing decisions he does make, and refusing to do his job and deferring upward for tough decisions.

    My criticism stays intact

That is not what Paul Krebs stated in the following article: http://www.espn.com/blog/collegebask...s-its-facelift
“My friends,” Dr. King said in his Detroit sermon, “all I’m trying to say is that if we are to go forward today, we’ve got to go back and rediscover some mighty precious values that we’ve left behind. That’s the only way that we would be able to make of our world a better world, and to make of this world what God wants it to be. . . .”

That is correct. Also, he is not concerned with the athletic department turning a profit so he is always going to try to have expenditures match or exceed projected revenue (so you lose money when the bball team is down).

That said, however, I still disagree with the way he handled Alford's and Neal's contracts. Should have made sure that contract was signed b/f that you don't mess with happy pressure and should have gave Neal his big extension after one season. I also think he should have reigned Neal in (or helped him) with speaking to the media.

Neal's extension and buyout will always be a stain on Krebs record, but are only a smaller part of a bigger picture which is generally positive and successful. It's hard to know about the guidance on Neal and the media. We don't know what Krebs did or didn't do. IMO Neal seemed to make strides with that, though it never seemed to be his comfort zone, and struggles on the court didn't help with that comfort level.
