    OT: NBA Scenario

    Need help solving a disagreement with my son. Watching an NBA Summer League game today. 5 minutes to go in the game with one team up 26 points. The losing team has the ball and the PG starts a drive from the left 3 point line into the point to the basket. The SG comes across to the top of the key and is wide open. The PG does not pass the ball but instead drives into the paint and gets a lay up around his defender. Pretty easy lay up although somewhat contested. SO here is the question...was that the correct play or should he have passed the ball to his SG for the wide open 3 from the top of the key?

    I think it depends on how reliable a shooter the SG is. But in general I think you most often want to get the ball to the guy who is open. Contests do work more often than not. Of course, superstars change that calculus. If it Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, Kawhi Leonard, LeBron etc. you just tell them to shoot wherever they feel comfortable.

    If it's an easy layup, take it. Still a lot of time left, just get points on the board.

    Drive for the and 1 if the layup is reasonably simple. And that's what it sounds like in your description.

    Well at this point being down 26 there's no reason to risk injury on a contested lay up. Kick it out for an open shot.

    If one team is up 26 with only 5 minutes left, one of the teams isn't playing defense, so it doesn't matter what they do on offense. Having said that, you take the gimme layup points, since they are probably only shooting 5% from 3 point range anyway if they are down by 26......

    Take at least three contested 3 point shots, banking them all in. Five minutes is plenty of time.

    If you're down by 26, any points are good...especially in summer league.

    Summer league = showcase yourself.. Everyone is going to take their shots. I say pass but in the NBA in a summer game? Not gonna happen.

    I think if the lay up is there you take it. You always want the most high percentage open shot you can get. Unless you are Royce Olney. Then you rebound the ball all alone under the basket, dribble out to the 3 point line stick the 3 leaving Andre Miller and Rick Majerus with a dumb look on their faces. But everyone else should take the easy points.

    --who is guarding the PG, and is there a chance to foul them out?
    --if the PG is assured of paking the roster, pass the ball out. PG needs to reward shooters who get open.
    --what has the team told the PG? "You need to show us you are a threat to score", or "we are looking for you to involve others"

    Down that much this late in a summer game, the W/L is moot.

    There is another factor in regular summer league games. Each quarter is worth a point in the standings, so even if you are down 26 points in the game, you still have a chance to win the quarter and take away something.

    Also, if the PG is driving toward the basket, was he in a position to see the SG drift open?

    Also, was the passing lane open?

    Pass the ball to the SG.

    It's the summer league. They are looking for team players with multiple skills. Passing is regarded very highly in the summer league.
