    Roster for 2017-18

    First Post Banner
Eleven eligible players and two transfers sitting out. We should actually have some okay depth now, which looked like that might not be the case a while back.

With three seniors, that means three open scholarships for the 2018 class. Looks like some real good possibilities there.

    Sam Logwood 6-7 SR
    Joe Furstinger 6-9 SR
    Antino Jackson 5-11 SR
    Dane Kuiper 6-7 JR
    Connor MacDougall 6-9 JR
    Anthony Mathis 6-3 JR
    Chris McNeal 6-1 JR
    Troy Simons 6-2 JR
    Jachai Simmons 6-7 JR
    JaQuan Lyle 6-4 JR (RS)
    Vance Jackson 6-8 SO (RS)
    Makuach Maluach 6-6 FR
    Vladimir Pinchuk 6-9 FR

The roster is coming together nicely. With a total of nine upper classmen (active seniors and juniors), we won't have any excuses (often used by you know who) that this is a young team.

Would appear to me that coach has plenty of potential to work with here. I believe we will surprise some early, and be a thorn to handle come conference time.

Who would have thought Weir would recruit a player from Germany, and another from Sudan (by way of Australia) before he recruited someone from Canada?

So knowing what we know now... what does the starting lineup look like come first game? Something like this maybe?

    PG -
    (Jr) Chris McNeal (6'1")
    (Sr) Antino Jackson (5'11")
I really feel like this could go either way, but I like McNeal's height and size better if all other things are equal

    SG -
    (Jr) Troy Simons (6'2")
    (Jr) Anthony Mathis (6'3")
Mathis should finally get his shot at consistent minutes, but I don't see Coach bringing in the #1 JUCO scorer to play 10 minutes off the bench

    SF -
    (Jr) Dane Kuiper (6'7")
    (Jr) Jachai Simmons (6'7")
    (Fr) Makuach Maluach (6'5")
I went back and forth on what to do with Kuiper, but looking at our front court depth, I just didn't like the idea of Dane at SG (bumping Anthony down to 3rd string again), while leaving Jachai as the starter with Makuach getting legit minutes as the primary reserve as a Frosh

    PF -
    (Sr) Sam Logwood (6'7")
    (Sr) Joe Furstinger (6'9")
    (Fr) Vladimir Pinchuk (6'9")
I believe Sam will start at PF. Joe will be both big men's primary backup getting plenty of minutes. Vladimir will get some time, but big men take longer to develop on top of being a Freshman. Just don't see him being the primary backup (same as Makuach)

    C -
    (Jr) Connor MacDougal (6'9")
    (Sr) Joe Furstinger (6'9")
    (Fr) Vladimir Pinchuk (6'9")
I think Connor can be penciled in as the starting C unless something goes dramatically wrong. Joe backs him up, and Vladimir is there for blowouts/foul trouble.

All and all, I think this will allow Coach to start to get his style and philosophy put into place. I'm looking at this roster and thinking that I am not at all gun shy about saying we can compete for the MW conference title year 1. If these guys can gel, we'll be in the post season one way or another.

I wouldn't be surprised to see both McNeal and Jackson starting in the backcourt. Jackson may have more D1 experience in terms of minutes played than anyone on the team while McNeal may be our most talented guard. It would be hard to sit either one.

Not a ton of height, but probably sufficient to compete in this league and considering the style of play that Weir wants to employ.

I agree. There is going to be more "small ball" than people think.

Key to this years team will be Speed, Speed, Speed and the ability to put the ball in the hoop quickly (Not passing up shots when you're open)

Another key is rebounding. Lobos were 241st in rebounding last season, NMSU was 17th. If we play small everyone will be expected to rebound. Logwood and Kuiper should be far better rebounders than they were under CN. I think we may see more big-big, if we play the small guards together, than people are expecting. Weir emphasizes rebounding.

Don't most people expect us to play only 1 "true" big at any given time? (Joe, CM or the new guy) Otherwise, most likely Logwood and Jachai play the 4. That paves the way for VJ to play an inside/outside 4 next year along with Jachai.

Albeit not a large frosh class, the three we have committed makeup a balanced group - 1 post type (4/5), one "on the wing type 2/3 and one point (1). I hope to be able to enjoy their development.

I think he's talking about the walk on.

I agree with UNMerciful that Antino is going to be better than some are expecting. I may be most excited to see him in a Lobo uniform than any other player this season. Looking forward to the season!

Antino is going to be huge for us. He's extremely quick and can shoot the rock. He also looks to be a high energy/sparkplug type player, a la Jamal Fenton but he's much better than Jamal.

Jackson, Lyle & the two frosh are still not on the official roster. It will be nice when they are and if it's just whoever is updating the site not getting to it - please do.

I remember thinking Jamal got screwed on that NCAA suspension when the hotel booker gave a discount without him really knowing or asking. Don't remember the kid ever complaining or making a big public issue about that. Class act for sure.

Just curious, with the roster now pretty much complete, what do you guys expect for this next year? 10 wins and middle of the conference, 20 wins and compete for a championship, 18-20, top 3 in conference?

I think as a minimum, 17 wins and a top 4 in conference from me. I do find it hard to gauge with so many new players that I am totally unfamiliar with, but based on what was replaced, I would assume Coach is upgrading the talent level and would be as good as I would have expected last. Also, if this group overachieves instead of under like the last few years, we should be much better.
Go Lobos! Go Nunn! Go Sam! Go Joe!

National Championship! Seriously though, I have absolutely no expectation good or bad. So many new players, new coach, new system. It is just wait and see but it would not surprise me if this team does much better than people think they will. Go Lobos!

Nothing short of the Final Four, well maybe not that, but I am thinking around 20 wins and 2nd or 3rd at the end of the regular schedule in the conference. I am, of course, an optimist.

Who knows? I do not think we have as much talent this year as last but last year's team underperformed badly. So, I will use last year as my starting point. If we do slightly better or about the same I am OK, If we do even better (20 wins) I will be thrilled. If, somehow, we do horrible I will be shocked since we play in the MWC and should be competitive even with all of the newbies. If we do poorly I will not complain because I think the following year we should be very good. So I will say 16 wins to be on the safe side.

All I really care is if the team seems to buy in to Weir's vision, gives all out effort every game, and doesn't have the egos/attitude/selfishness that last year's team had (well 1 player at least). W/L's don't really mean too much this upcoming season as much as building the foundation. The little things he's already done like having the team do hot yoga, taking the names off the jerseys, looking at the importance of math/stats in the game to justify minutes have been a nice new approach. I fully expect Weir and company will definitely want to win every game though as will Lobo fans!

Alford's first year we finished middle of the pack and lost a tight 4/5 match-up to Utah in overtime...but you could see what was coming.

That was against a much better MWC and after the team lost arguably its beat player to a broken leg in a pick up game. But, they also only added 3 (I think?) new players and one of them turned out to be one of the greatest Lobos of all time. All in all, that was an amazing first season for Alford.

I think that's kind of a difficult comparison and I don't think it's really fair to Weir to make it. Considering the mass exodous of players that was occurring, the program as a whole was probably in better shape when Alford took over than when Weir took over. I wouldn't expect them to win 24 games, but I am cautiously optimistic that they'll get right around 20 and be on the NIT bubble. Even if they don't do that, I won't be disappointed, but considering the way this off season has gone, I don't think anyone can be blamed for their optimism, so long as it's reasonable.
    FEAR NOTHING!!!!!!!
