Three UCLA players arrested in China

    First Post Banner
We will see how Steve Alford and UCLA will deal with this situation.

LiAngelo Ball was one of the three players arrested.
How will LaVar Ball clean this up for his son?

UCLA plays Georgia Tech on Friday in China.

It appears to be a minor petty theft crime (i.e., stealing a designer handbag), so diversion may be the way that the Chinese deal with this. Basically, no actual prison time but some type of community service and a fine.

I thought designer handbags ran in the hundreds of dollars? And how would they serve their community service, maybe pick up trash at the airport lobby on the way back home?

In China you can get knock-off's for pennies on the dollar. For example, you can get a $4000 Chanel handbag for $50.

I doubt daddy Ball is going to influence tje Chinese authorities in any good way. Snd while I suspect this will not result in the three players being detsined, there is certainly no guarantee they get to leave on time. Pleanty of opportunity for some "community service" before they exit.

Intetrsting thought: if they are sentenced to X-number of community service hours, does Alford try to have the whole team divide the tasks as a team'building exercise?

No matter what the value this is a poor situation--and some seriously stupid decision making on the players' part.

I have seen petty theft threshold go as high as $1,000 or as low as $200. But those are for crimes in the U.S.

Since we are probably not talking about a crime involving thousands of dollars worth of merchandise, they are young, first time offenders, and the fact that the schools are involved, I would expect the Chinese to treat as a petty theft type crime.

They will definitely have to pay a fine, and diversion usually requires probation and community service.

I seriously doubt it as if caught public officials convicted of bribery and/or corruption are usually executed and their family is charged for the bullet. That is no joke as I spent a couple of months there and was warned by ex-pats and locals about the harshness of their criminal justice system.

Knock off or not. Perceived cost into the theft is where it can go from simple misdemeanor to a felony. In China, all of that may be less open for interpretation

For years, I have heard of these UaE stories where travelers have just specks of 'drugs' on their hair, backpacks, or shoes and they are basically black mailed into paying money into getting it out of jail time. I don't feel so bad for the balls. But the other kids may be sol.

The middle East is different than China. But at the same time, these colleges are putting kids in bad spots, where consequences aren't just 60 days probation and a fine. But life changing. Stop playing these games in other countries and teach these tourism boards a lesson. That's the only thing that will change things.

Don't think they are knockoffs at a Louis Vuitton store located in the Hyatt Regency.

If LaVar Ball weren't so outspoken and the character he is the allure of this story would be muted. Add the Alford piece in for local fans and at least for some it adds a bit more as well.

Outside of all that, it's a damn shame these guys did this. Bad pub, bad way to represent themselves and their sport in another country. All eyes on them.

This is delicate from the Chinese standpoint as well. They have invested heavily in basketball, paying American players in the CBA lavishly. If this turns into a major incident, with players being held for a long time, it could be the last college game they get. Public sentiment could turn against American players, and/or American players could stop going there to play.

Chinese authorities may be looking for a quick resolution, because going for blood could jeopardize their whole basketball industry.

Great perspective. I don't think China would choose to throw the book at them considering all the circumstances and I think they'd be firm but reasonable even if there weren't a surging interest in basketball in their country. But they will certainly make their own statement, and I think would expect some recognition or reciprocation for their leniency.

These are true freshmen and kids are dumb as hell. Even so, How in the hell would three American(not of Chinese descent) kids who are between 6’5” and 6’8” expect to commit a crime in Hangzhou, China and disappear into the ether?
