Competing with the Big Boys is doable

According to Ken Salinger Coach Brad now knows he can compete with anyone. Before last night he wasn't sure. https://www.abqjournal.com/1092799/u...-bradbury.html

Team is definitely improved and can probably compete with the bottom tier of the top 25. Still a couple things short, imho, to crack into top 15-20. Still early and a few big non conference games to be tested against. See how things look in a few weeks, maybe have a chance to creep into top 25?? See how the team does next week end with 3 games in 3 days. Then in December a stretch of games with Tech, Oklahoma, Navy and Lamar before conference season begins. As fans we can look ahead and speculate, hopefully team looking one game at time LLobos should have an easy time tonight, may be a good game to have because of possible mental let down after Marquette before NMSU makes the trip north Saturday. NMSU did beat UT Permian(7-20 last year) last night by about 30.

We haven't been tested by a zone defense yet. Neither WMU nor Marquette could guard us man-to-man without fouling and neither could we guard them man-to-man. But we had enough humility to admit it and play zone. They didn't.

You can bet CSU and Wyoming will pack it in against us and test our perimeter shooting. That's why despite the excellent play by our slashers in the first two games, we still need our shooters like Madi, Jayden, and Emily to see some action before conference begins.

Cherise has always been an inconsistent shooter, Tesha, so far as advertised, is a good shooter. Alex is streaky. Be interesting for teams that play zone if they will go like a diamond and one and keep some one out on Tesha with her range. When Mykiel is feeling confident in her knee I think she is capable of being somewhat consistent outside. The freshmen guards we will see how they do out there. Be interesting to see if NMSU switches up defenses or tries to stay matched up one on one. Should be an interesting match up of quick freshmen guards, N'dae and Pam Wilmore.

The NMSU/Western Mich replay game is available on ESPN 3. I was surprised they lost that game, even with a first year head coach and quite a few new players they looked pretty good except for a terrible shooting night. I know that Williams and Salas can shoot a lot better than they did in that game.

This year DePaul beat Oklahoma in an overtime game, Northern Colo beat DePaul both games in the preseason WNIT. Marquette beat DePaul 3 times last year. I know that doesn't necessarily mean much as this is another year and who knows what match ups there will be, but interesting.
