Writing was on the wall for Debesse. LJ just wasn't getting it done without a Carrier/Gipson and Tuitoti and the receiving crew were pigeon holed in roles that didn't maximize their talents and minimize there deficiencies. Hoping the next guy schemes to his players and not to a system set in stone.

It would be interesting to know (don't now if we ever will) if they (which ones which) left of their own volition for other opportunities vs. because Davie let them go.

That's not good. You might not want to drag everyone down to South Campus, but you at least get on the phone.

I would like to see coach Wright get promoted. He has a good relationship with the players, understands the game and I believe has the ability, if allowed to, could move UNM to a more balanced team. He is also a good recruiter.

That could work too, but if he promotes from within, I would go with Wright

This was such a weird season coming off the last two. Going to into the season I thought that the Lobos might take a step back because of the players they lost to graduation, etc., but I didn't anticipate anything close to how badly this season did turn out.

I am glad to see DeBesse go. I have nothing against him but I want to see more diversity in our offense. That does not mean we have to get pass-happy but we should at least pass more.

Lots of role changes on offensive side of ball. This will be interesting.

Can we learn the new terminology and system in spring practice?

Great day for Lobo football. Not developing a single good QB in six years is grounds for dismissal.

I wonder if Davie is doing this on his own or if Nunez is the one pushing buttons???

Sorry for these two guys but I would guess they both land decent gigs elsewhere. I Will reserve judgement until I learn a lot more - probably not until replacements are named.

Bring in some some young up and comers with innovative ideas and who can relate to the players. I think this is also a sign that Coach Davies is happy here in New Mexico that he is letting some of his staff go to improve the team.

I have a different take. The triple option made us difficult to prepare for. People think we should chuck the ball all over the field. Good luck, with our troubles recruiting, getting a QB that can be successful doing that. Part of our problem this year is we were determined to be more balanced instead of sticking with what made us successful the last couple of years. We also didn't really have a home run hitter in the back field. I hope I'm wrong , but I feel if we go away from the triple option, it's going to get worse before it gets better. Just my opinion.

The jig was up. What made the offense successful the last few years was the great running ability of Pressley and Gipson and the O-line coaching of Lenzmeier . All that was now gone and you saw how it played out this year. There was no magical recruiting to re-create that going forward. The playmakers aren't there. Debesse hasn't developed a decent DI quarterback in six years. No reason to think he was going to start doing it now. Yet, you see it's possible at places like Wyoming and New Mexico State even.

Tough to recruit QBs to a system where they know they will get their heads bashed in. Tough to recruit receivers to a system where they won't be thrown the ball very often. Tough to recruit O-linemen to a system that doesn't prepare them for the NFL. So, it's all predicated on gamebreaking RBs and formations and just being "good enough" everywhere else. It fell apart this year. The recruiting reality made a change absolutely necessary. It wasn't sustainable because the main pieces you need for it weren't there and weren't coming. It may be painful trying to install a new system, but it has to be tried. Get a coordinator who can start to develop an actual QB and you might have something going. Let's see what happens.

Glad to see Simmons go, we need a CB coachnthat knows how to coach proper technique for man to man coverage, and recruit for the position.

As for Debesse, we needed a change because we were not going to recruit a top notch QB with Debesse here. In our recruiting battles opposing recruiters just had to point out Cole's & Lamar's stats and say, "do you want this to your career numbers?" Now I still believe we should run the pistol/option but we a more balanced attack. If we can pass the ball this offense would unstoppable.

Agree but but would add the real problem with the O this year was fall off in O-line - combo of injuries, misses in recruitment and graduation.

I too, think if we are another "me too" college offense our recruiting will be even more difficult - we will be recruiting for the same players as everyone else and we haven't ever fared well in those battles for all the often discuss reasons - at least with our unique identity we have been able to,find kids who fit it (except o-line for this year). Some may think we will be better able to recruit kids with a "me too" offense but I suspect, we will be sucking hind teat for those prospects.

Therefore, I hope that whatever we go to is somewhat unique and can create an identity that allows us to recruit to it as opposed to,competing with everyone else for the same kids. For example, We could even keep the triple option but with a real RPO component as opposed to only having a play action passing game. In any event it will be interesting to watch it evolve.

In in the interim I want to thank the coaches who are not coming back - I think we should all agree, they were extreamly hard working and Debeese's O took us to two bowl games and gained us some positive national recognition (first time in a very long, long time) as the leading rushing team in the nation.

Most of the issues come down to the offensive line. It has been said thousands of times. If you do not have an O line... you have zero.

Debesse was also a major issue. Quite a few kids do not believe in his play calling and it showed. This team was toast after the Wyoming game. Keep running the same plays that do not produce much of anything but run those plays that have good gains at a minimum. What do you do?

It seems to me that Coach Davie felt that a more diverse option attack is needed to get to the next level. He said at the beginning that the triple option was going to be used because it would fit the needs at that time. It seems that that time has run it's course. I suspect that we will see a much more balanced offense using the throwing and receiving ability of the current players. I have felt that the triple option had too much need for at least 3 starting option QB's as we have seen too many QB's knocked out for various time periods due to concussion. In the last coach's show, he pointed out that UNM had 42 different players start this year and how that effected wins for teams that had more than 35 nationwide. The option requires consistent timing to be successful for an entire season. I do not recall a season under Davie that had only one QB start the entire year. Lamar was remarkably durable but look at what happened to him the first part of this season and wonder how it would have turned out if he had been available all year. Also I think that other teams in this conference have learned how to defend the triple option. Neither AF or UNM had success this year.
