Wow, that's funny. That NOW gives us another Top 100 RPI win, at least as of today. That gives us 4 wins (W. Mich, Marquette, Navy & NV) and 1 loss (OK).

Unless another team makes a big run, we are not scheduled to play another top 100 rpi team again this regular season.

Now, it's time to go to work and win the games we need to, starting with BSU "Up Next".

Please insert my usual rant about RPI.

The behavior of the RPI rank that you describe is a perfect illustration of why, until late in the season, RPI is a really bad statistic.

The average of three non-RPI rating services has the MWC grouped into four groups with a virtual tie for second between CSU, Nevada, and Boise State. I hope they turn out to be right, but there still isn't a lot of data, especially in conference play where teams know each other's weaknesses.

    Avg: Sagarin, Massey, Moore
    ---------------------------

    47: 50, 44, 48 New Mexico

    115: 134, 107, 104 Colorado State
    116: 108, 120, 119 Nevada
    117: 128, 138, 86 Boise State
    143: 150, 141, 137 Wyoming
    148: 158, 147, 138 UNLV

    212: 208, 205, 224 Fresno State
    233: 240, 225, 233 San Diego State

    272: 274, 252, 290 San Jose State
    287: 294, 280, 287 Utah State
    309: 286, 335, 307 Air Force

With their leagues, it is gonna be hard for Nev, W Mich and Navy to stay in the top 100. They all need to pretty much run the table.

Most of the models do not make a team suffer for playing weak opponents the way that RPI does. Admittedly, to avoid getting dinged they have to dominate those weak opponents, but the sheer fact of playing a team ranked, say, 305th, does not harm the team playing the cupcake. Perhaps if they win by "only" 24 points it might hurt them, but having them on the schedule is not hurtful in the calculations. My own preference would be for an average of Massey (the last time I looked at it - several years ago - it was based only on W-L) and Sagarin, which is an amalgam of 3 different models all based on point differential.

There is a book written about 65 years ago with the title, How to Lie with Statistics. It';s now in the public domain so you all can read it if you want to. http://faculty.neu.edu.cn/cc/zhangyf...Statistics.pdf. As I recall it, the book teaches one how to be suspicious of statistics. Can't vouch for it now, since it's been a long time since I read it, but I do remember liking it back then.

There is a book, written years ago, which I recommend highly (that is, based on my having read it about 40-45 years ago.) Since it is apparently now in the public domain, I am including a link to the text. It is called, How to lie with Statistics. Here's the link" http://faculty.neu.edu.cn/cc/zhangyf...Statistics.pdf

Actually, W Mich plays in a pretty good league (8th-rated Mid-American) with several teams that won't hurt their RPI and could actually help if they finish in the top five. Unfortunately, they are currently only in the middle of the pack of a 12-team conference. But four teams are in the top 100 and only three are higher than 141 in Sagarin.

But Nevada and Navy have no more games on their schedule against top 100 teams so it is unlikely they will be able to lower their RPI since it is so heavily based on strength of schedule.
