    Who do you miss most?s

    First Post Banner
As a bit of a respite from the norm, I have a "kinda" OT question - of all the guys that left the program with the coaching change, who do you miss the most? For me it's X. While Harris might have had the most potential and others might have provided that "go to" component (EB), I think X's enthusiasm, effort, team first attitude and dedication to D would have been perfect for this team and just as a fan who enjoys watching these kids play, I miss watching him - just my opinion- what's yours?

For me it's definitely Jefferson. I think his length and athleticism would have been perfect for this team he has tremendous potential.

In my opinion we have plenty of X types.....great effort, strong D, but a bit lacking in offensive consistency. Even though Jefferson might have been similar....he seemed to have lots more potential to become a great slasher and scorer (like a D1 version of Troy). Of all the departed, I would have liked to see Jefferson continue with this team.

I'm 50/50 with Harris and Jefferson. I still wonder what the bigs could have done as well.

I personally wanted to see Jordan Hunter thrive as a Lobo. Hunter was a steady ball handler with a solid jumper and played strong defense. Also, he loved to be a Lobo and I appreciated that.

While I disagree with your presumption about having X types and good d but problems offensively, as I agree with Weir that's it the opposite, I appreciate your take and agree that Jefferson had great potential.

I look at what the current team has and needs, and that makes Jefferson the most missed. Hunter is a good handler, but so are our current PGs. We have plenty of outside shooting to replace Harris, so not a critical loss. We don't have height or that go-to driver. If he were here and the opponents had to be concerned with a slash to the basket, their defensive scheme would be a lot harder. Whether he drove and shot or kicked it back out, the offense would be a lot more effective. That's why I'm looking forward to seeing Jackson and Lyle step in next year.

Probably both Harris and Jefferson because I think they would have been great in the current system.
My position as a moderator adds no validity to my opinions. I am a fan just like you and as such when I express a view it represents me and me alone and carries no more weight than any other fan other than the fact that I am always right. (Like everyone else.)

Definitely Jefferson! He could hit the three (and would have had another off season of working HARD on his shot knowing what Weir would have wanted) and his driving/athletic ability would have indeed been perfect for this system.

He also would have helped balance out the classes.

Just think about what next season could have been... Lyle, Jackson, Jefferson, Mathis, McNeal, Simons, Kuiper, Maluach, Simmons, AND throw Drinnon in there as a 4* true freshman. I would match those guys up against anytime in the MW and feel just fine.

Our front court will likely be much improved as well with Pinchuk getting a LOT of experience this season. Add Tajuan Agee and Isaiah Maurice to that equation and we even have size.

Jefferson would have been the one guy on the roster who would really drive the ball to the rim in that entire group. Drawing fouls, kicking out for threes, hell just dunking over people if they don't rotate quickly enough from our three point shooters... I can see it all in my head right now *sigh*

Still, we won't know exactly what we're getting from Lyle and Jackson until they are out there on the court playing in actual games. Maybe one of them can fill that role?

    Fun discussion of "what if"

None..those that LEFT~~did not have the mindset to play the way the New coach required. They wanted their way or the highway they chose to follow. Like the way a young man like Joe F bought into and i now finding the success he could have shown under the previous coaching staff. He had the heart and guts to play hard and not quit..>NOW he has the opportunity to Show IT
    Those that left~~good riddance.

I think Jefferson and Harris would have fit in with Weir's system well.

I do think people are overrating Jefferson quite a bit though. He has tremendous potential, but potential isn't always realized. He still needs to show that he can regularly shoot jumpers before he becomes a complete player. People are talking like he was an incredible offensive threat. He averaged 5.3 points per game and shot 21% from outside. Compare Makuach's freshman season to his. Makuach actually shoots well from outside (.435), and has an incredibly efficient overall field goal percentage (.583 vs .438). Maluach is also a good free throw shooter (.783) while DJ shot a Shaq-like .490.

Also with Harris on the team do we get Drinnon? Probably not, and that scholarship would have to come from somewhere. Drinnon already looks superior to Harris, who appeared to be quite raw even at the end of the season.

So it is fun to think about these guys, but remember that if we had them, then someone on the team would not be here. I think it worked out well in that we got some talented replacements, and the Neal culture is almost dead (though it clearly still lingers in at least one of his former players).

Brown. I think he would have gone nuts with proper coaching and in this system. Wed have a a couple more wins with him as a clutch go-to guy at the end of games.

However, I will never hold it against someone who transfers as a graduate. No bad blood.

Those are some good points. Makuach is having a better frosh season compared to what Jefferson did. His efficiency can't be ignored.

Also consider we might not have Vance or Jaquan if some of those guys had stayed and those are obviously two far superior players. So long-term, it will pay off even more.

Couldn't disagree more about E Brown. He wouldn't be a fit in Weir's system. As far as E Brown goes it was addition by subtraction.

I was happy to see them go, but:
EB is having a very nice, consistent season at Oregon.

CN started out miserable, but has put together 5 nice games in a row averaging about 15 minutes off the bench.

Your punctuation LEFT--a little to be desired. No need to bash those that left. Relationships matter and those that left most likely went places where they had a more established relationship with the HC. Of the players I would have loved to see Jefferson develop here.

Gunner off the bench is pretty much the ideal role for him. They used him similarly at MSU. The dream early on was to make him into a PG so he could play in the NBA, but chasing that dream was central to the implosion of Lobo basketball under Neal.
