Observation from the last two games

    First Post Banner
I like the effort and teamwork the eight we had playing the last two games have given. I hope it makes Coach realize that shortening the bench might not be a bad thing. The game flow on both ends has been much better with a shortened bench. I believe Sam and Troy can still contribute down the stretch but I'd like to see them earn their way back into increased minutes. Hopefully with a good attitude and team mentality from each of them. Agree or am I jumping the gun with this observation?

Coach talking right now on the postgame again about what this group of eight is doing.

Just have to say that the pieces with these eight seem to fit better than with the ten. Not that we don't need more depth, but I see more cohesiveness with this particular group.

Good, scrappy win tonight with the great eight stepping up. I must say there were times where Sam would have been helpful and certainly Troy from a depth stand point. We need them going forward.

I've been busy - is McDougal officially a no-go this year?

Joe with another great game, 17 pts and 10 rebounds in 33 minutes. MM also impressive with 17 pts and 5 rebounds in 33 minutes. Nice work from Jackson and Mathis too. I'm surprised Dane played 29 minutes and only went 0-1. He needs to shoot more going forward. Less press and playing 8 sure worked tonight.

Anthony had 5 rebounds 3 of them offensive and Makauch had 5 with 3 of them also offensive. Both had clutch free throws. It is special to both of them coming along like they have!

It certainly is possible that going back to 10 will mess with the mojo. I hope Weir sticks with this core of 8, and just uses the other two for spot duty of 5-10 minutes per game (at least until they show they can start hitting shots regularly).

Amen to that. I have been watching the body language of players - so much better than we've seen since Alford. I think Weir knows how to motivate his players to achieve their best. Good to see them not looking over their shoulder.

Not sure if we will be able to make .500 with this limited roster, but I would much rather watch this squad than any of the Neal-coached teams.

This is the time of the year that we have seen the team stagnate or regress. Like the direction this team is going.

Neal's teams always started the conference season well, the wheels never came off until at least late January, and always in February (except Neal's first year which was essentially a loaded team left to him by Alford).

    2013-14 (11-1 start to conference with 5 road W's through 2/5)
    2014-15 (5-2 start, 2 road W's through 1/21)
    2015-16 (7-2 start, 3 road W's through 2/2)
    2016-17 (6-3 start, 3 road W's through 1/24)

I agree about the effort and enthusiasm this year and I don't expect to see the February swoon that plagued us the past three seasons. It's been fun to watch, and last night's crowd was very enthusiastic considering the size.

It's worth noting that the shots that Troy was taking are shots being taken and made by Mathis, Jackson, and Maluach.

I think it's a combo of both the smaller unit learning to play cohesively along with just more time on the court. Extra court time has been huge for Makuach and will start to benefit Vlad through time. If a lot of this is about buy-in then let the others work their way back. Yes, they could be of real benefit to team depth if they can do what coach needs them to do. The defense was great last night in the second half. Yes James had a couple of slashing thunder dunks, but he's highly athletic and seems like one of those that will "get his" on just about any given night. If I'm not mistaken we limited Dalton to only 2 points in the 2nd half. Huge. That's team effort on defense and having 8 guys learn to work together is definitely a big part of that.

before we all get too enamored with the "great eight" lets not forget that Wier's stated plan is to be best in March when we have not worn down all our guys because we have played 10 or so about an equal amount of time + pressing when the other guys are tiring out. I'm not 100% sure he is correct but that is his plan for the season and being limited to eight does not fit in. However, I agree that I would rather have eight all on the same page as opposed to 10-11 who are not. I have noticed that even before we started playing with just eight, that we had almost completely abandoned the diamond back court trap press in favor of more straight man or trapping around half court. I like this better as the diamond trap we were using (not sure why we did it this way) virtually always allowed a pass to the middle and the opponent having numbers.

Our Lobos definitely took a step forward with this win. The rebounding was vastly improved, as was the defense in the second half.

It will be interesting to see how Coach Weir handles the re-integration of Sam Logwood and Troy Simons. I'm guessing that if they don't fit the current chemistry they sit quite a bit.

Dane did not look healthy last night. He had a heating pad on his leg and was noticeably limping the whole game. Despite that he was playing injured, he played some great defense. We need to focus on getting him healthy and hopefully get some momentum going.

10 men needed to play this style. Assuming a top 5 finish in MW 3 games in 3 days in Las Vegas , 10 men essential.

I noticed that too. One of the announcers said he "got kneed in the knee" I believe. If so, it may be a passing thing. We definitely need to protect the players we still have going, additional injuries would be a tough blow.

i like the ball movement of last night or the quick 3 even if we don't make it.

oh so clever, not. Sam really could have helped us in the first half. Yes I liked seeing MM get a lot of minutes, but Sam is a big, strong guy that we will need going forward.

One thing I haven't seen anyone mention is that with Sam out it forces us to go big big more. Joe and Vlad played 7 minutes together against Wyoming and 12 minutes together against SJSU. I think that has really helped us on the boards, and defensively in the paint. I don't ever recall seeing those 2 on the floor at the same time so much before the last 2 games.

The first time they played together was at the Colorado game. Coach mentioned after that game that our best plus minus was when they were on the court together

I don't buy into a shorter bench, and I believe we need all 10.

My hope is the shots for Sam and Troy start happening. We need them, and as far as I am concerned they haven't done anything wrong and don't have to earn their way back. Sam and Troy are both trying, and were great cheerleaders off the bench.
