    Road Warriors

    First Post Banner
Lobos have been less then stellar on the road so far, like 0-fer. Want to make a run at 1-5 in MW and avoid playing Wednesday? Got to find a W or 2 outside the Pit. Vegas has Lobos as pretty big dawg at 8.5.
Time to step up and grab one, no?

In order to establish actual progress is being made in the area Weir himself says that we have to improve, mental toughness, we have to win a few on the road. This is the next opportunity to do so and it is very much needed. Of course, Fresno will have something to say about it.

I'm excited for this game. With the team's better and more focused play (all in all) over three of the last four games, this game is a chance to put that growth to work against a pretty good, but not great, Fresno team. Seems like the right match-up to test the team's progress over the last week or so. We will have to contend with their big bruiser underneath (Carter). Can't get into foul trouble against him. Then there are the two Taylors and Marvelle Harris. Taylors can shoot, Harris can attack the basket. Won't be easy, but if we help on D the way we did vs Wyoming in the 2nd half we've got a shot. As always, have to hit some 3's and take care of the ball.

    Go Lobos!!!!!
    Beat Fresno!!!!!!

I'm still at 'one game at a time', low expectations mode. A win would be amazing but very surprising, IMO. Still just a huge talent gap against most conference teams. It's like my golf game, as soon as I start taking things a little seriously and get expectations up, it's down the (insert Trump Haiti reference here).

Lobos need to bring the defensive intensity again. Fresno is pretty balanced in terms of scoring, similar to UNM, but they've got significantly better averages for FG and 3P shooting. However, part of that is the result of not taking nearly as many 3P attempts as the Lobos, so that opens a bit of a window in terms of scoring difference.

Harris is playing pro ball in Lebanon, so I think we can stop worrying about him. Hopefully he's helping to rid the country of Hezbollah between games.....

wonder if he plays with Ferris (?). Talked to Daniel’s dad a couple months ago and he said Daniel was going back to play in Lebanon....after some serious injuries.

Thanks. The roster I brought up for '17-'18 still had him on it. Should have used a better source.

Based on our start, it will take a miracle to turn this around enough to escape with a W.

Still can't figure out how to make a shot or defend on the road. This was McKay's downfall. Couldn't buy a win on the road.

With Weir, it's definitely more of a roster issue, as any decent inside players just lick their chops when UNM comes to town. No diff tonight.

someone came back to only be down by 2 at the half. Is this the break-through game on the road???

Time for this team to grow up on the road.

We still have @SJSU and @AFA. Those are the best chances for road wins. We'll be big underdogs in all the others.

We just don't defend away from the Pit.

It'll sound funny- and sounding funny is my thing, it's true- but after we're down a couple of touchdowns, things could have easily skated south the rest of the way, kind of like they did at Boise. Instead, though, these guys started scrapping and pulling even at 40 just before that last tip in at the half came by them moving their feet much better and extending their defense, most of the time effectively. That continued for the first 12 minutes of the second half. They had their lapses, but Fresno has as many matchup problems for the Lobos as Boise did.

I agree the turnover on the OOB play with the score tied deflated the Lobos and they never recovered from that. Still need to mature and add some mental toughness, but I liked their scrap...

These guys just aren't used to playing with a lead either. They haven't been in that position enough. Agreed on the first 12 minutes of the 2nd.

Playing just eight changes things, there were three with over 30 minutes and while these kids are in good condition that is pretty much a change. I think they can adjust if it stays this way, but it isn't the same as moving ten in an out. It would be nice to get Simon back with his head in the right place and we could certainly use Sam's size.

Bottom line is that right now we are just not good enough to win on the road - question is will we get enough better to do so. I think it is not only important for this year but also for next as it will be helpful for momentum in the off season (a clear sign to those returning that what Weir is teaching is beginning to pay off) and for recruiting. If we can win one or two on the road during the regular season and then get one or two in the MWC, I think it will return great benefits going forward - not to mention validating this season and the coaching change (not just firing Neal but also hiring Weir). To me we are good enough to do just that offensively but really not there defensively yet. I think we have a ways to go on the D side of the ball but am hopeful we get there this year.
