    Cherry Blazer

    First Post Banner
I feel Mr Weir has now earned the right to wear "The Cherry Blazer" and aour next game vs San Diego St would be the perfect game to break it's maiden voyage?
lets pack the pit saturday and support the nasty nine!

Weir already said in an interview that he won't feel ready to wear the blazer this year and he said he is not sure if he will ever feel like he has earned the right to.

Regardless, I'm in full support of packing the pit on Saturday

I definitely don't see him wearing it until next year when we have a good record and are playing a Top 25 team. I appreciate that he feels he has to earn it.

Games like Wednesday are a big step, lots more work to be done. But absolutely, an SDSU home game after a big road win....perfect occasion to Pack The Pit. Go LoboNation. Support your Local Lobos.

I don't get the impression that Weir is interested in the cherry blazer due to the way he approaches the games. I think he's more of an "every game is just as important as the next" type of coach.

Frankly, I couldn't care much less about him wearing the blazer. I am super happy with the weeblee win and happy for the team (coaches and players). I hope we can continue to build on this and work our way into something competitive on a regular basis. This is what I have been looking for, improvement as the year wears on!

Maybe the Cherry Blazer is a tradition that can be revisited now that we have a new coach and new AD. Is this even something that they wish to continue? Personally, I always thought the jacket looked cheap and never really liked it. So I guess we will just have to see how it plays out.

It kind of seemed like Weir felt the blazer wasn't high on his priorities...and I'm fine with that. He always seems to be way outside of the box..my guess is he wants to start his own 'thing' and not follow along in the footsteps of the Alford/Neal era. I'm completely good with that.

While it doesn't make any difference to me, I'll just take the guy's words and let that be the end of it for me - he said he "hadn't earned it yet." When he feels he has "earned" the right to wear it, then we will see if he wants to continue with it - if so, great, if not, no big deal. Just my $.02.

So that was an Alford thing that was soiled by Craig Neal. Let’s go ahead and burn the cherry blazer never to be seen again. Let Weir do his thing.

Weir is not worthy to wear the red blazer. Not until he discards the annoying coachspeak and shows consistency in game situations. Also recruiting....omg...we have to recruit better players

I dont know about burning it, but I dont really care if he ever wears it. I care more about how the team plays and getting wins.

How much do you listen to coach? Pressers? Pre and post game shows? There is much more substance mixed in with the coach speak than we've had in quite awhile. He's as honest as he can be and makes no excuses for anyone. Coach speak is also imperative if you're going to survive the fishbowl. Some of what goes on in the program is just none of our business. If you want to watch 5 star players on a regular basis perhaps you should root for a P5 school, Louisville needs a few more fans these days I believe.....

IMO, this season isn't about Weir anymore. In my book he's earned the right for fan's to be optimistic, he's got the kids playing hard and selfless (mostly). He's a keeper in my book.

That said, he should wear the Cherry Blazer, play it up and let these kids experience a Pit Game. They've earned that without question.

I guess I'm not sure why all the fascination with the cherry blazer and what it has to do with a game being a "Pit Game." Fans don't cheer more loudly or stand more or hit a higher decibel level based on the attire of the coach. I don't care what the coach wears (within reason) if the team plays hard

So now the HC has to earn the right to wear a red jacket, when did that rule kick in? I think he earned the right to wear a red jacket when he signed his contract.

At the presser when coach was first hired the jacket was presented to him. Rather than trying it on he said he hadn't earned the right to wear it yet, that when the time came when he felt liked he'd earned it he would wear it. The OP is saying that, in his opinion, Weir has now earned it. Following comments all spin off of that.

I did just have a thought in response to those who have said the blazer is an Alford invention and should be discarded because this is a new era. Maybe so, but maybe Weir knows it's an Alford thing and is waiting till he thinks he's on par with that coach before he puts it on (he did start his career under Alford). It is a good tradition IMO. We'll see what coach does. Go Cherry Blazer.

Why have a white out or a red out of whatever promotion? Try and have some fun with it. Alford didn’t wear the cherry because it was in style. He wore it for big games and to give something to us fans. No voodoo, just some fun.

The cherry blazer has never been a tradition. It was Alford's thing and who cares anymore. Might as well pull out the turquoise jewelry like Ellenberger wore in the 70's. Every coach has their own thing. Weir is more concerned about making the basketball program as successful as he possibly can and that's what matters most. I think he will be very good here at UNM.

A red out or white out or black out is a completely different thing. It's about the fans getting involved and being part of something at the game. I like what Alford did for this program, but he had a very different personality and approach than Weir. TBH, I think the cherry blazer had an element of making things about Alford than the team or the fans. Focus was on him -would he wear it or not and what signal that sent. Fans know when it's a big game.

I like the Lobo colors, but that blazer flat out sucks. It reminds me of those hideous college coach sports jackets of the 1980s. Put me in the camp of mothballing it.

I say stick to the philosophy of every game being just as important as the last. I thought it was a silly tradition because being able to pick and choose when to wear it gave off the impression that some teams could be more overlooked than others. And how would you take it as a player on the opposing side to see that you weren't "worthy" of the cherry blazer. Would certainly add another chip to my shoulder if there wasn't one already.

And really, that jacket is just plain fugly. Lol

It's time for the Cherry blazer to go away. It was the mark of the Alford era which one of the most amazing runs in Lobo history, and it was the mark of the post-Alford downfall.

I say let's move on, and let's make winning the primary tradition!
