Weir Will Never Wear the Blazer: You Care?

    First Post Banner
Geoff Grammer predicts that Paul Weir will never wear the Cherry Blazer: the big-game jacket coach says he hasn't earned. I for one don't care: Does the symbolism of the jacket or Weir's lack of wearing it mean anything to you?

No. I like the idea of it, but if he feels he can coach them more effectively without wearing it, I'm all for that.

I don't care if he ever wears it. It's a tradition for other coaches and this guy doesn't care about other coaches traditions. He's doing it his way and I respect the hell out of that....

I think he'll put it on, after we beat the $hit out of NMSU in LC next season!

yeah, I care. It's tradition. There's no tradition as to how many times you were it or how soon you were it, but yes, he needs to embrace that at some point. It's the "big game" blazer.

Does he wear it if we get to the MWCT Title game or would that throw him and the team off? Maybe, if we were to miraculously win the MWCT, shouldn't he put it on then, after the game to wear in the presser?

It’s not a Lobo tradition it’s an Alford tradition.

I care. I like the tradition Alford started. I think it would be a cool follow-up to what he announced at his introduction presser. It'll be interesting to see how he chooses to go with it whenever it is that he chooses.

All that said, if he decides to let it go, that's his perogative and that's fine too.

Wow. 27-3 at the half. The Cherry Blazer needs to play some defense.

I believe that Dave Bliss used to wear the cherry sport coat for what he called "Pit games." I am not sure that Alford really started it. Anyhow, I do not really care either way. I do believe that Weir will wear it but only at such a time he accomplishes something really great like.......a MWC Championship Game or a a Sweet Sixteen Game. His aspirations are much higher than just beating NMSU or something like that. It is going to have to be a really special game after some major accomplishments.

I thought it was cool but always wondered if it affected the players at all? I mean, if the coach is treating an opponent differently how are the players going to react to that? Are they going to be too amped up? Is doubt gonna creep in cause coach is basically stating the other team is "so good" he's gotta break out the jacket?

I just think its a bad move mentally for your team.

Jackets don't win games, players and coaches do. If he doesn't wear the red jacket, it won't affect how many wins the team gets. JMHO

Retire that ugly blazer! It is as ugly as a leisure suit. Weir really does not want to wear that red rag and I totally agree.. Some traditions should have never started.

I do not really care one way or another. The "tradition" goes back to Coach Alford that Coach Neal continued. I thought Coach Bliss used to wear a ugly plaid red jacket during some games.

In any event, I think the fans liked the cherry blazer for big games. If Coach Weir decides to embrace it, I would be OK with that too. Either way, just win the next game.

Nope. Alford wore it with pride and did UNM proud. Neal? Meh, not so much. To each their own. If Weir decides it’s not his thing and he wins a bunch of games and puts UNM back in the top 25 regularly and gets UNM back to winning MWC championships and a Sweet 16 run, it doesn’t matter to me if he wears a NMSU T-shirt under his clothes.

Ya I am with you on this one. I need pics or it didn't happen. Alford is the first coach I remember wearing that ugly thing during a game. Don't remember Bliss, Fran or McKay wearing it.

Wearing the cherry blazer signified an important game to Alford/Neal. I think Weir gives them all equal importance, so it doesn't make as much sense. But in all honesty, I don't care;)
