It’s been 5 years and some Lobo fans still are upset. Especially after the current state and enthusiasm surrounding the Lobo basketball program. I mean seriously! I find it just awesome to see various people in all kinds of professions seize opportunities and go on to new experiences. You can’t grow mentally if you are just going to be bitter about everyone else. Focus on yourself and not so much others.

Just me, but I thought that I detected that same deer in the headlight look in Steve’s eyes in the late 2nd half against the Bonnie’s that I saw in the Lobo’s game against Harvard.

Not a diss; only an observation.

Doubt he's fired this season. He has a top recruiting class for 18-19 & couple of freshman that redshirted, more than likely won't lose anyone early to the draft. Also, UCLA now has to pay Mora's buyout & a larger Chip Kelly salary. The hot seat for next year will be smoldering!

I will always cherish the joy that Steve Alford gave us for 5 years in the regular season and MWC tourny. Truly, it was a stretch like we have never had before, ever!

That said, he does seem to have an issue with the NCAA tournament.

Read again. Nothing I said was incorrect:

    1. "His buyout now is $6.2M." TRUE. If he was fired today, his buyout would be $6.2M.
    2. "[buyout] drops to $3.6M at his time next year." TRUE. If he were fired on March 14, 2019 (i.e., at this time next year), his buyout would be $3.6M.

I think you took what I said too literally. The buyout does not "drop" next year. It "drops" on 4-30-18 like you said, but if he were fired at this same time next year, won't the buyout have dropped from where it is today?

It is a key distinction though. UCLA might consider firing him this April, as a 3.6 million buyout isn't all that much for them. It all depends on whether or not they can line up a decent replacement who is ready to take off running after starting at a late date. If they can't find the right man, then they will surely keep Alford one more season.

Alford may have been arrogant. But he put the Lobos back on the map after a long bad stretch. I changed the ignorant thread title to reflect that.

Don't forget Bliss and Ash would load up on at least a dozen cupcakes each and every season they were here. Rudy "The Godfather" Davalos was a heavyweight on that NCAA Selection Committee at Houston and New Mexico. He was still a player in the NIT Selection Committee upto last season. I don't know if he continues in that capacity to this day. The truth be told, it was "The Godfather" that kept the Lobos in that good run in the NCAA Tournament. The Lobo's SOS was dismal during that period and probably would have kept them out a couple of times but for Davalos.

Wow...the Lobos had an RPI of 62 in 1999. That wouldn't even make the bubble today.

The LA Times is reporting that Alford is expected to return next season.

Of course that’s what UNM said about Neal last March.

He may have. Word is that in the next round of announcements of the FBI investigations UCLA will be on that list. UCLA is certainly expecting it. This from Bruins Nation and their reporters.

That he may, but with the cachet that UCLA has it would seem it isn't necessary. The last round of FBI announcements didn't get rid of Sean Miller though. As to Bruin Nation, their hate is easily seen and has been that way since Alford arrived. God only knows why anyone after careful consideration would want to get in the middle of their demented fans.

False. The Last Times and Bruin Nation both reported that after April 30, 2018 the buyout drops to 3.6.

That is fact. I guess the new year of his contract starts May1, 2018.

Look he has the #1 recruiting class in the country coming. At the way he coaches he will get a sweet sixteen at best. He does not coach defense at all.

He used to say to us if you don't guard you don't play. I called BS cause Phillip MacDonald not only pplayed but started. He couldn't guard a door much less a moving athlete but Alford played him. I don't like coaches saying.g stuff like this then doing the opposite.

The other thing is I was never on the Steve Alford bandwagon when he was here. I didn't like the hire. He had a mediocre record at Iowa. He failed in the car toruney and he did here too. He has a reputation of underachieving in the NCAA toruney.

My biggest problem with him is he never came up the ranks as an assistant where he could learn from a veteran coach. His ego costs him games all the time.

He has had 4 NBA players on his team every year since he's been there. Last year he had some serious talent and lost in the round of 16.

This year he had one of the best big men in the country and he didn't run enough plays for him. He had 2 points against an undersized St. Binneventhre team. His bugs always have bad games against undersized teams. Can you say Harvard???

He needs to be fired and go be an assistant somewhere and learn the game from a coaches standpoint.

In the 90s we went to the Dance 7 of 10 years, won one game in the tourney four years straight and were ranked in the top 20 for most of those four years.

Yes, a slight over glorification of Alfords tenure. Nothing had more excitement, from my view, than the last few Bliss years. If Olney doesn’t go down Thomas jr hear that team could have advanced a long way in the tournament. Bliss has far more national success than Alford. Maybe downplayed because he turned out to be a scumbag. He was a solid coach and he didn’t succumb to a mighty team like Harvard.
