I think he might. PAC 12 got screwed royally and the loss in the play in game is a big embarrassment not only to UCLA but also the conference as those SMUG selection committee judges say - “see we told ya....”

Maybe Alford should cheat like Sean Miller. Go figure.

PAC 12 screwed royally? What makes you think that conference was all that great this year? Aside from Arizona, who else looked like world beaters. The only team I think was screwed in that conference was USC and what the @(&$ @# was it that Arizona St with a < .500 conference record makes the tournament. I get the great early wins but the last part of the season that team was a dumpster fire, kinda like CSU.

Fresno or Colorado state need a new coach, he might be good enough for them.

I would not be surprised. Alford has never been embraced at UCLA, and a play-in loss is unacceptable for the flagship school in the Conference of Champions.

Lotsa juice from the boosters could got after a real heavy hitter.

Should Stevie get canned he'll never have to work again. Move back to Indiana and run his motel.

No. His buyout now is $6.2 million, but drops to $3.6 million at this time next year and just $1 million two years from now.

I think their administration will give him one more year to turn it around. I think the "China Incident" and the resulting suspensions, along with the huge buyout and another Top 5 incoming recruiting class will help bail him out.

The guy looked old and tired last night and he certainly looked like a guy ready to hang it up.

Not with the recruiting class they have coming in next year (including Shaq's son). I think Alford also gets some credit for how the China issue was handled and effectively jettisoning their commitment to the other Ball Bros.

How was the PAC 12 screwed? Is your argument USC got screwed, leaving UCLA and ASU as last in for the play-in game?

2 weeks ago, UCLA and ASU were both bubble teams. Only AZ and USC were both considered locks. 2 weeks ago, UCLA did beat USC, but USC did finish 2nd in PAC 12 regular season and USC did make it to the PAC 12 tourney final. I get how USC got screwed, and really ASU should have not made it. UCLA was also a last team in, and per the play-in games are the last 4 in that are around that 11th / 12th seed. There could be argument the PAC 12 shouldn't have two play-in games, but I am sure both ASU and UCLA were grateful they were even taken.

Regardless, this was a bad loss for UCLA. Losing to the Bonnies isn't getting screwed. It's losing.

Bagging on him? It's a legit question. At a blue blood like UCLA it's the final four or you are toast.

How did the PAC 12 get screwed? Outside of Arizona, I don't think that conference was very good.

Alford has the worst conference record for UCLA since the 1940s. As one poster put it, the thought they were getting the UNM Alford but they got the Iowa Alford. Now they want Billy Donovan! lol

The question posed by the OP is definitely legitimate. My problem is calling him Alfraud. Perhaps he was a fraud at Iowa and UCLA, but he was the real deal at UNM. As BoRealist pointed out, that was the best run the program has had and it came on the heels of the Fraschilla/McKay disasters. I understand some are still angry about how he left UNM, but I for one have no problem with the job that he did here - both in terms of wins and getting the academics on track.

The PAC-12 2nd and third place teams didn’t even make the tournament. How is that even possible? And the highest seed is 4?

PAC 12 is a major conference with major talent on every team just like the ACC, Big 12, SEC and it sure does seem a different criteria is used. And yes ASU did NOT deserve to go but I think the 6 teams ahead of them in the standings sure did. Any team with .500 or better in PAC 12 should go because that is the Standard used for the other conferences. They really over thought it this year with this Quadrant system. It’s just another way to let every team on the east coast in and have a way to justify it.

Unfortunately always the east coast bias. Not to go off on a tangent but teams below .500 in their league should not be dancing unless they win their tourney.

The fans and boosters never embraced him. They had been turned down by a number of coaches and went to Alford knowing he’d say yes. They thought they could sell him based on his name but the fans were t having it. They just fired a guy that had 2 Final Fours and brought in a guy that had less success at lower programs. Having grown up in PAC 10/12 country they thumb their nose at MWC level schools.
I think he gets one more year unless UCLA knows they can get a main target of theirs.

I beg to differ, we have Weir and I believe that's a "nice thing". I really couldn't care less how Alford's team does now that he is gone. Go Lobos!!

I’m a CPA, and the definition of fraud is “wrongful deception intended to result in financial or personal gain”. Steve signing an extension and professing his undying love for Albuquerque and UNM, then two days later bailing to sign a big contract with UCLA and taking our starting point guard with him meets this definition. Therefore I will always refer to him as “Alfraud.”

But the Pac12 was even worse than a down Big10 in out of conference, outside of ASU. The Pac12 did nothing this year to deserve more than 3 spots, and the only thing the committee got wrong were which teams after Arizona got in. (USC and Utah over UCLA and ASU)

The quadrant system is idiotic, and it allowed some really bad teams in like Syracuse, Oklahoma, and ASU, but you should be replacing them with Penn State/St.Mary’s, Middle Tennessee, and USC, so nothing really changes. The Pac12 had their shots to rack up impressive OOC wins and blew most of them, outside of Washington and ASU, and both then proceeded to be bad in conference.

Technically, a lot of supposed Lobo fans meet this criteria as well.

The thing with the 'China Incident' is that I think some will also use that against him. He is the captain of that UCLA ship and is responsible for everything the 'sailors' on that ship do. So the fact that his sailors embarrassed the University, the team and even in some regards the good old USA falls at Steve's feet. It happens in all walks of life. Everything should have been done by Alford and his staff to ensure that never happened. Apparently the kids were not counseled strongly enough before the trip. I am not saying that Alford could have done anything short of sequestering in their hotel rooms for the entire trip to absolutely prevent an incident, but he's the boss and the buck has to stop somewhere.

Sooner or later - Alford’s toast - fame fades quickly in LaLaLand - and he hasn’t won a national championship for the Bruins. He messed with happy. https://www.google.com/amp/s/thebigl...es-better/amp/
