Aussie guard signs with Lobo women

By Ken Sickenger / Journal Staff Writer

    Thursday, April 12th, 2018 at 7:04pm

"Bradbury has spent plenty of time watching Hurst play, albeit none in person. Her unusual recruiting story began with Hurst and her father, Joe Hurst, contacting UNM’s staff. It continued with hours of video research."
“We’ve seen extensive footage of her playing against high-level competition,” Bradbury said. “We liked what we saw. Ahlise can really play, and her skill set fits what we do.”
"Hurst has basketball bloodlines. Her father, known as “Jumpin'” Joe Hurst, played college hoops at Southwest Missouri State and went on to a successful pro career. He was MVP of Australia’s National Basketball League in 1998."

It's never easy to predict how good an international player is from stats without knowing the level of competition. In Ahlise's case, her limited stats playing in the WNBL (Australia's highest professional league) last fall don't tell much because she didn't play a lot of minutes. But consider that three of her teammates are WNBA players including a #3 pick, Kelsey Griffin, and a #4 pick, Rachel Banham.

Here's the top 7 players on Bendigo:
    Age 30 Kelsey Griffin (1348 pts & 1019 reb @Nebraska, WNBA #3 pick)
Age 24 Rachel Banham (3093 pts @Minnesota, WNBA #4 pick)
    Age 24 Betnijah Laney (1401 pts & 912 reb @Rutgers, WNBA #17 pick)
Age 24 Nadeen Payne (WNBL 2009-present)
    Age 33 Gabrielle Richards (485 pts in 2 years @Oregon 2004-2006)
    Age 25 Ashleigh Karaitiana (1167 points @Hawaii)
Age 30 Heather Oliver (725 points in three years @USC)

As a development player, she's probably not playing at near the level of her older professional teammates. But unlike her UNM freshmen classmates, the transition to college should be a cakewalk by comparison.

Ahlise looks like a strong, ready for college, athlete. I'm looking forward to seeing her play.

One thing I'm wondering, though, is if she will enroll at UNM in August or wait until December. She was selected for the national team scheduled to play FIBA games in October. Not sure if that is possible while going to school at UNM.

Hopefully it won't interfere with her showing up this summer with the rest of the freshmen and being ready to play in November.

"Coach Dee Butler and her staff have put together a versatile and athletic group of athletes for the camp which is the first step in preparation for the 2018 FIBA Under-18 Asian Championship which will be held in India this October."

These were the two articles that made me wonder if she gave up her spot on the team after she signed with UNM or if she still plans to spend a week in India in October. In this day and age, one can miss a week of classes and keep up online. But how much practice is involved between the first preparation camp May 12-14 and October? Just wondering.

It seems strange that they would have the games in Oct for a college age roster . Usually they are in July and Aug. Are you sure they are in Oct.?

    edit Found a different date;
    WT INDIA 2018 22. Sep 2018 23. Sep 2018

Still during 1st semester but BB practice hasn't started yet.
