    OT Lindsey Whalen

    First Post Banner
Named Minn. head coach. First coaching job ever. Said she will play on the Lynx team still. I really like Lindsey's game. I imagine there will be a few bumps along the way as she gets a hold of the coaching side but I think she will turn into a great coach. Pretty gutsy move by the AD.

I find it interesting on two fronts:

--that she thinks she can be a head coach--and a brand new one--on a part time basis

--It took Minn 3 days to fill their job while it took TT three months

I think Dawn Stacy did that when she first started, coach and still play.

Reminds me of when Tennessee literally gave the van keys to a 22-year-old graduate assistant who had never coached, but was an All-American player. That was a different era, but she turned out to be a pretty good coach.

In high school my track coach was Dick Young who once held the world's record as a member of the mile relay team from the U of Illinois. "But when it came to coaching," he told me, "I didn't know sh** from Shinola."

I think it's quite possible that this will be her last season as a player, and then she will be a full time coach. I'm sure she probably wasn't expecting this coaching opportunity when it came, but I have to imagine this is her dream job. So she had to take it, but at the same time she didn't want to leave her Lynx teammates just before the season. So she gets the farewell tour and then the dream job. Pretty sweet.

Last year, while Lindsay was playing, she hurt her wrist and was out for quite a while. However, she was coaching while she was on the bench. She was very involved in the decision making and you could see in the huddles that she was giving directions to the players. I think Coach Reeve was giving her this opportunity to develop. This year, Lindsay has been a part-time commentator on the Timberwolves games. So I think she was stretching her wings and trying out to see what she wanted to do. She also became a part owner of her former AAU team here in Minneapolis. I don’t know how that will work now... One thing though - last year they would comment that her husband was sometimes being called “Mr. Lindsey Whalen”. Now it’s going to be even worse. 😂. Put some good assistant coaches around her, though, and she is going to do well. She has what it takes.
