    upgrade?

    First Post Banner
Are the three new "signees" an "upgrade" over the two transfers out + whomever else that means? Time will tell but for all those that were more than ok with Connor leaving because of Maurice, are we still ok with his loss? Could mean MM stays at the 4 and delays his more natural progresssion. Its always hard not to get over-hyped by something new and undervalue what you have (true in life as well as Lobo b-ball). I sure don't have the answer - only time will tell.

I don't think we ever got a solid look at how good or valuable Connor could be. He never seemed to play more than a few games with meaningful minutes. For the amount of time he was on the team it seems as if he only played sparingly. So, not sure how you could compare him to anyone with the little amount of time he actually played.

We've got VJ, Agee and Ezzy all at the 4. I don't think there are any issues that would keep MM from moving to his natural position next season.

fair comment - i was just looking a jc stats v. jc stats but you are correct to see what he actually did at the d1 level which was very incomplete. i also think that JS never really got to show what he could do. i'm not sure why as he seemed to keep a good attitude when on the bench & i i think he was fairly productive on both ends when he got some PT. however, in all fairness, i didn't see practice.

How often do you envision Weir having two posts on the floor, as you seem to be anchored to?

    From EZ's signing announcement:

"I feel really comfortable with Coach Weir's philosophy, playing up-tempo and playing mostly four out and one in."

And don't forget, Vlad's not going anywhere, and I would be shocked if his game doesn't progress from Year 1 to Year 2.

Agree re Vlad. Last yr best combo was with joe & Sam (natural 4). Regardless, time will tell.

First off, how are the fans in any control over what the coaches and players decide to do?

2nd, Connor applied for the medical waiver, didn't get the waiver either from the Pac 12, nor the MWC, since the MWC defers to the Pac 12's decision, so even had he stayed here the max would be 1 year. Maybe, he and his family have researched other schools and conf's and feel confident, they can still get two years of eligibility? Again, it's not the fans that pushed him out, this was the players decision.

Connor was oft-injured so it may have been riskier if he had stayed. ** EDIT **

Connor wanted out. He wasn't pushed or forced out to the best of my knowledge, so I don't see why people compare him to the new bigs and indicate we should have kept him.

I do think we need another big (center) if no Maurice. Maybe the Manigault guy?

I think VJ and MM will be interchangeable. They will both play the 3 and 4 at the same time while in the game together based on what the other teams defense gives them and on whether or not a team switches players when we run our offense. If the other team has a big 4 VJ will guard him on defense and MM will pull him out on offense and drive to the hole.

I’m pretty thrilled that returnees/redshirts have already been meaningfully practicing together for a year.

I was not "blaming" the fans for his departure - you are correct in this case for sure. I was just commenting about some folks always thinking the new penny is "shinyer." Personally, I wish UNM had tried harder for his med. red-shirt but I agree with all his injuries and foul-plagued first yr. here, we really don't have much to compare with. Regardless, it now looks as if he is getting that year back (glad to hear) and wherever he goes they are getting a good kid, hard worker and very talented athlete. Maurice, who many thought was an instant "upgrade" (again, without fair comparison) opts out and his "replacements" are a bit of question mark based on their JC record. In fairness to all, I think my OP is just a bunch of speculation and we really won't know for some time. In the interium and for our immediate future we have the guys we have and I'm grateful they really want to be Lobos and I wish them all great success.

Given the way the roster looks, I think I would have preferred (but then again, I'm not the coach and don't know what is needed or what is available) another big but at this point, I hope we don't get another recruit for 2018 as that would mean we would be losing on of our returnees or one of the new kids doesn't come for whatever reason. I'm excited about who we have.

I'm not sure how much more Weir and UNM could have done? The MWC was not going to grant the Med RS year, by the bylaws that are voted on by the Presidents of each school. UNM's hands were tied and they did everything they could.

My only confusion in this whole thing, it sounds as though he will get his 2nd year back, but has he even chosen a school yet, or would he have gotten his 2nd year back had he simply stayed at UNM? I thought if he stayed in the MWC, it was a no go on the 2nd year?

The waiver was for Connor’s first year in college. Since he received the waiver, that year does not count towards his four years. This past season also does not count because he redshirted. Thus, he has only played two years. I heard that Pepperdine and its new head coach, Lorenzo Romar, is interested.

Heard that in addition to Pepperdine, Connor is receiving interest from Washington State, Iona, and Tulsa.
