    Alford will hire Murry Bartow.
Bartow was an assistant coach under Bobby Knight at Indiana from 1985 to 1987.
Bartow was the interim coach at South Florida.

    Sounds like a personality clash.

Recruiting to UCLA is not a difficult job, and the Bruins have not had issues getting players so far under Alford.

Grace seemed to rely on one main select team source, maybe Alford wants to shy away from that.

UCLA probably staying one step ahead of the next release of FBI investigation results. Grace will be the fall guy.

According to the L. A. Times, Alford intends to hire Murry Bartow, son of former UCLA head coach Gene Bartow:

Apparently, Dan Guerrero asked Alford to make a coaching change (due to poor results this past season), and Grace was the fall guy.

Sounds like Coach Alford and Coach Neal had a bit of a fallout in their relationship over the last few years. I heard Coach Alford say some encouraging words to Coach Weir but seemed silent in regards to Coach Neal and seems to skip over opportunities to work together again.

The rumor is that they were never really as close as people thought they were. They obviously had a good working relationship, but people tend to assume that they've always been best friends, and I'm not convinced that's the case.

Since they seem to have been close since HS in Indiana and spent quite a bit of time coaching I tend to believe they were and are friends. Alford's popularity among some at UCLA probably could not stand having Neal aboard. He picked former head coach Gene Bartow's son which looks to me like a wise choice considering his present situation there.

Alford seems to have a lot of "friends" but no one really likes him. Here's the type of thing he does to his friends:

David Grace on what Steve Alford told him about not being retained at UCLA: "He said that Dan [Guerrero] wanted to make the change and the next day I talked to Dan and Dan said he never told him to make a coaching change, so I don’t know where that came from."

Believe it or not Alford's closest friend may be Ritchie McKay. They have gone on church missions together. Not for any group like FCA and Such. Just as friends. Broussard is on the staff at UCLA. He is also a Ritchie McKay guy. Alford also tried to hire McKay to his staff at UCLA.

Also Alford is talking religion now in some of his press conferences. He must be really worried.

With the Culture in today's society, Alford should have never been hired here with the way he handled his player at Iowa and the sexual assaults. In Todays world he would have been sued and fired.

Alford lied to Grace about Guerrero wanting him fired. Alford told Grace Guerrero wanted a change. When pressed Guerrero said he never said that and would not ask a coach to change an assistant unless it was something outside the program that happens.

The LA Times is claiming Alford lied about the whole situation. Grace apparently was fired before the final four. But news was just leaking out yesterday.

They say it's to stay in front of the FBI but I don't believe it. Grace said he never has cheated and that UCLA will not be on any FBI watch list.

UCLA has not done well in the SoCal recruiting area until Grace showed up. He is one of the best recruiters in College Basketball.

Bartow is garbage. He has only 4 NCAA tourney appearances in 19 seasons as a head coach. Not that great an assistant either.

I'm just shocked that Alford has been able to maintain his job at UCLA. Worst coach in the schools history post Wooden era. Record wise that is. He has had some of the best recruiting classes ever at UCLA and yet they haven't won a conference title or gone past the sweet 16. His defenses are just bad. His offense has no real structure. If it wasn't for Lonzo Ball his record would really be awful.

I would take Alford back here in a heart beat LOL. Those 6 years were the most fun I have ever had as a Lobo Fan. I hope Weir gets us to that level, but even last seasons MWC Tourney run wasn't anything remotely close to what S.A. did here over 6 years, 7 if you want to count Neal's first year which was Alford's team. Can't be bitter. It is the industry of college hoops. It is like life. If I get a job opportunity to move to LA and make 3X the money, I'm cleaning out my office desk and hitting the road.

I loved the Alford years right up until he messed with happy, but there is no way that I'd want him back now. He likely doesn't have the drive he had when UNM rescued him from Iowa. He hasn't shown much in the way of coaching chops the past five years. It is possible that he just doesn't know how to coach blue-chip players, and would do better with lunch-pail type players, but it is also possible that he caught lightning in a bottle at UNM and wouldn't easily repeat it. Neal was not a good head coach, but some of the blame for his early failures definitely rests on Alford's shoulders. It was apparent that Alford under-recruited guards who can shoot and handle the rock for years. The obvious explanation is that he was clearing the way for Bryce, but regardless of the reason he did not set up the Lobos for future success.

I am very glad we have moved on from the Alford/Neal era and have Weir at the helm. Sure he has some minor ties to Alford, but he's not really part of his coaching tree. He also has entirely different way of doing things, and is lacking Alford's Hindenburg ego.

As an aside, note that UCLA fans are wondering if Alford's handling of the Grace firing is enough to fire him for cause.

No to Alford. Yes to Weir. I think Paul Weir is one of the best young coaches in the country. I just hope he sticks around for a very long time. He's smart and hard working. Those two qualities are explosive. I also like his humility. He's exactly what the Lobo men's program needed.

You obviously must enjoy getting taken advantage of and then going back for more.....the "our program" you mentioned must be for another school you root for other than UNM, silly wabbit.

You must not like winning MW Championships and beating ranked teams constantly at home and on the road and getting high seeds in the NCAA's and being a fixture in the Top 25.
