A Few Locals Added to the Team - Always Nice

    http://golobos.com/news/2018/1/29/me...al-talent.aspx

Good luck to our local players. Nice to see Weir always notices those close by.

That's awesome. A couple of solid local players for sure.

These sound like some high level walk-ons. I imagine they could have found schollies at a D-2 school or lower level D-1 school. Very nice to have players like this on the practice squad. I like that Arroyo is a 6'7" defensive and rebounding force. You don't often get that in a walk-on. Plus Arroyo is a great name for a Lobo to have.

How many walk on players do we currently have on the roster? Is there a limit?

Rare to see walk-ons announced as being added to the roster this early. These guys must be enrolled and all set for summer school. Good for them!

They both made a commitment a few months back. I know odds are against them but I would love to see either or both work their way in to earning quality minutes somewhere down the line. I do believe that Weir will reward hard work and success on the court if they are able to achieve at a high enough level.

These guys both add more character to the team. There are some solid all-around individuals in the program.

I love it, and honestly I hope they can find some meaningful minutes throughout their career here as Lobos. Chavez seems tough as nails and Arroyo gives some nice length and rebounding. Glad they are on the team!

I love it! You build a recruiting wall around your home state, even if you have to take the guys as walk-ons. Previous coaches would have let guys with this level of talent go elsewhere for a schollie, but Weir seems committed to convincing guys to stay home. Even if they don't end up getting meaningful minutes, they will definitely be a huge help in practice.

And what does it say about Weir that he can convince guys like this to walk-on for him when they could likely get a scholarship to play elsewhere? He must be doing something right if these guys would rather stay at home and pay their own way.
    FEAR NOTHING!!!!!!!

    Anthony Chavez and Jordan Arroyo?

Congrats to Anthony and Jordan. Great kids, great families. Super proud of both boys. The Lobo Nation is going to grow to love those two players.

A ton of credit to Coach Weir and his staff for making the effort to spend time and attention on both players and families throughout this HS season. Great choice bringing them to UNM. Go Lobos!!!

There are more walking also. Just these guys were announced. But there are others already in the program and a couple who sat out later year due to injuries.

How many players can you have on a roster??? I count at least 5 walkons.

You never know, some walk ons turn out to be real gems . Weir bases his playing time on how well they do in practice . They have a chance to play and to earn a spot . Keeps your scholarship athletes working hard as well .

I haven't heard of any limit on walkons. Some P5 teams have a lot of them suited up at home games.

This is good stuff. Both are great players and had big high school years. The next local kid that Weir needs to set his sights on is 6’4 PG Zanen Zeller from Los Lunas. Plays for the D1 ambassadors in the summer. He actually upset Anthony and the Vikings during the season. Anthony is a great player, I went that night and Zanen was the best player on the floor. One game mind you.
