Incarnate Word has a football team? Color me surprised.

I lived in San Antonio back in the early 1990s and they didn't have a football program at that time.

I just wiki'ed them and they started playing football in 2009. Whoa!

They should give free tickets to YAFL teams and pack the place!

I do not like playing them either but I have season tickets so I have already paid to attend the game. I will be going, Even if I didn't have my butt in the seat I paid for my tickets so I would count. I get it. I am a big soccer fan too. But quit pitting one sport against another. Stick up for soccer if you like but quit pitting it against football.

This is almost as bad as the basketball team playing Northern NM last season...WHY?
How does this help the football team?

No one is pitting on sport against another. It sucks cutting sports. The point is that the cost of this game alone probably is enough to save multiple sports. Paying incarnate word to play here versus being paid to play a body bag game. Whether you like it or not, football needs to pull their weight. But at least the football team might be 1-0 for the $1M wasted on this game.

and...it's about the interest it gains by playing one or the other...and the impact on subsequent games in tickets sold...

Than why two threads, one bashing fb, the other shout praise for soccer?

I confess, I haven't looked at the schedule recently, but we already have one body bag game, another here would not help. The revenue gained by those games is also a potential loss of bowl money as well. Your point is well taken, and I wish it was a bigger team, but it is the same at many schools for the opening game, and even out hoops has a lot of softies on the schedule.

I think the mismanagement by the prior ad is biting us in the butt. Sad really, but you just can't keep running a negative budget. Well, I guess our federal government thinks so. Lol

Here we are in a budget crisis, and I am sorry to say I would schedule two body-bag games. Nunez should be talking with LSU (ex-employer) and with Florida (an alum) to play them possibly every other year. And Davie carries a big name. Besides A&M he should have contacts to get a few big games too.

while i recognize the financial benefit of a "body bag" (prefer the term "payday") game, we also have to look at the overall economic return of having a successful season. Its a tough balancing act. I would like for b-ball to also look into swallowing our pride (insistence on home and home) by playing a "payday" game or two.

The question is how much are they paying Incarnate Word? Last year Abby Christian walked away with $325k to take a beating.

Early season games are either for wins or revenue. No one needs more than 1 guess which this is.

Tough crowd. I understand the budget frustration, but The next week UNM goes into Camp Randall to play a bodybag game against what will likely be a top 10 Wisconsin team in front of 100K. My guess is they wanted to open up with a surefire win, minimize injuries, and build confidence going into a game against what will likely be the best team UNM has played in 20 years, possibly ever. New Mexico fans are fickle. This entire schedule is geared to try and start fast 3-1, to generate some casual fan interest going into conference play. It's a fine line between playing necessary revenue generating games and sacrificing an entire season by playing multiple bodybags in a season.

It's all about momentum for the season. You play this game because it helps your team tune-up for the season. It's standard at most schools. The only way you don't play a game like this at home is because you were invited to play a nationally televised game at a neutral site against a big time opponent. Other than that you have to play this game. NMSU has not done this in the past and it has hurt them. You have to have a "scrimmage" game like this.

Plus it helps get me in the right foot for tailgaiting the rest of the season.

yep...Portland State was the beginning of the end for Rocky...would have been better to put Liberty there and have another body-bag game in Liberty's spot...

A successful season to me will be playing in a bowl game other than the New Mexico Bowl. A successful season to me is stepping up to actually playing "payday" teams, and be competitive. A successful season to me is seeing average attendance closer to 30k, though I will take 25k as a start. Successful seasons to me is having 3 to 4 consecutive winning seasons without the word "rebuilding".

Playing Incarnate World is really no different than playing Abilene Christian, Southern, South Dakota or Portland State. Some people think we are too good to ply them, but Fresno State apparently isn't.

We do need a tune up game at the beginning of each season. Every school does it. I would just rather play a lower level CUSA, Sun Belt, or MAC team. It certainly does not help attendance but every team does not a few easy wins.

And I would guess you wouldn't have to pay an actual FBS team as much, but I could be wrong about that.

Even if the Lobos don't win the Wisconsin game, they will get lots of media attention if they are competitive. Nobody expects the Lobos to do anything, so if they show up and somehow make a game out of it early in the season, people will pay attention. If the Lobos manage to win the game, oh my God, it will be riots in the streets!!

As for the Incarnate Word game, I think it's a great opener as long as it doesn't go Portland State on us. Playing anyone who isn't in a Lobo uniform is a good first game, so you can get a feel for hits and stuff not coming from your own team. Once the Lobos are ranked in the top 50 every year, then they can start to look at tougher opening games......
