"University of New Mexico head women's basketball coach Mike Bradbury has announced that Bride Kennedy-Hopoate, who played last season at Iowa State, will transfer to the Lobos program and has signed a grant-in-aid. She is the final signee for the squad for the 2018-19 season."

"What she also brings is experience with the Australian National Team, and that is something coach Bradbury feels will be invaluable with the rigors of Division I basketball and the Mountain West."

That makes 16. Someone else is out unless Bride is paying her way for one of the two years she will be here. Noticed they left Ni'Asia's name off of the fall signing class. Don't know if that is significant or just an oversight. We'll probably hear an explanation soon, maybe in tomorrow's paper.

Ni'Asia has not been listed in either of the last two press releases. After the first one I asked if it was an oversight, but got no reply. This would make it seem like not an oversight.

The four fall signees, four spring signees, and seven returning players all sound pretty solidly committed. "Three senior posts graduating next year" includes Jaisa and Erica. And Aisia, Emily, and the three sophs have all been practicing all spring. I would be shocked if it was anyone else.

I know she got injured very late in the season, but not sure if that has anything to do with it? With Jucos there's always an academic piece they have to be qualified in order to move into the D1 ranks as well? Not sure if all those academic requirements have been met? Maybe something will be released shedding a bit of light on the situation?

Very happy to hear of this signing. She has good strong size and at 6'4" should be able to help us match up with other MWC teams as well as other P5 teams. Only 1 year left, but can help bridge the gap to our next frosh post recruits.

It's clear to see first with Richelle and now Jaisa, having a big dominant post player can really help your team immensely. Hopefully Bride can follow in those big steps.

Now, having a few 3 point sharp shooters would help immensely as well.

Hopefully, Autumn Watts will also commit and really solidify our interior for the post Jaisa, Nike, Erica era.

appears pretty mobile and surprisingly quick for a 6'4" post player. Appears to have a lot of upside.

What is a "grant-in-aid?" The article said she signed that. Is that different from a scholarship or just another term?

    (Sorry if that's a dumb question ....)

I believe it is the same thing, but I am sure a more knowledgeable poster will confirm or deny.

An grant in aid is not an athletic scholarship. I know that last year UCLA gave a grant in aid to a point guard who transferred from Texas Tech who had to set out a year.

The terms “scholarship” and “grant” are often used interchangeably, but there are usually differences between these two forms of aid. Most scholarships are merit based. This means that they are awarded to students with certain qualities, such as proven academic or athletic ability. ... Most grants are need based.

I too am thinking she is getting a grant in aid to cover some school expenses while she sits out a year per NCAA rules. So she may not count as an athletic scholarship this coming year. Maybe Isabel will be able to check and let us know if that is the case.

College basketball: UNM women add Iowa State transfer

By Ken Sickenger / Journal Staff Writer

    Monday, May 7th, 2018 at 10:29pm

"She played for the Australia in the U17 World Championship and spent two seasons playing junior college basketball in the United States. Coming out of Hutchinson Community College she was rated as the nation’s top JUCO recruit by All Star Girls Report."

“She’s a big, strong post,” Bradbury said, “but she can step out and make plays, too. She’ll push our posts at practice this year but I really want to work on her game. She’s got the ability to be a really good one.”

"Autumn Watts, a 6-foot-1 forward from Highlands Ranch, Colorado, visited UNM’s campus along with Hopoate over the weekend. Watts averaged 16.7 points and 9.9 rebounds as a junior at Highlands Ranch High School last season."

I think anyone getting financial aid counts. I recall that was confirmed when folks here suggested Cullen to take the Lottery to skirt the limit. Otherwise this would be a major loophole and every program in the country would be abusing it.

I talked to the SID, he said he does believe Bride counts as a scholarship player. I also asked about Ni'Asia McIntosh. He confirmed she is not going to be part of the fall class.

    The eight players are:

Jayla Everett, Bre'asiajah Matthews, Shaiquel McGruder, Quincy Noble, Ahlise Hurst, Nike McClure, Najala Howell and Bride Kennedy-Hopoate

It's a shame that McIntosh won't be here this fall. Was looking forward to seeing her play. Hopefully she finishes her degree sometime in the future.

Any indication on why? Kind of weird since she already signed and was the only local NM player in this year's class.

Thanks for getting the final answer, Isabel. I wish all that a person needs or could want for Ni'Asia. Family first and no regrets.

So we've got two red shirts and 8 on the bench to support our 5 starters. Seems like a good system to me. Quality in the present and quality in practices and home-developed quality for the future.
