Birmingham is seeking a three-year extension with a raise

    First Post Banner
"Birmingham recently completed his 11th season with the Lobos under a contract that paid him $208,000 annually. He said he is seeking a three-year extension with a raise but declined to discuss specific figures, adding that he has exchanged offers with UNM in recent months. The two sides have yet to reach an agreement."

Heck - if Ray was just paid a reasonable percentage/commission on the amount of money he has raised for UNM, it would be far greater than his salary. He damn near built the baseball field and facilities with his efforts.

I hope to see Ray for at least the 3 more years he is requesting. Good luck Coach.

Given the athletic budget shortfall and the fact that other head coaches are simply hoping their programs avoid being cut, to me, the timing of his request has poor optics...

Agree 100%. Asking for a raise when your entire department is hanging by a thread. Absolutely classless.

Given that the shortfalls in the Athletic Budget were due to the extreme mismanagement of others - most of whom are now departed - I find it incredible that some would perceive that a man who has done so much, and exponentially raised much more than he was ever compensated, should now be asked to assume the shortfall for those others.

I understand baseball does not have the clout of basketball - but, I would venture a similar attitude wouldn’t come Weir’s direction when a new contract needs to be arranged.

Bottom line - we must fund adequately and competitively any program the university decides to retain. These were the words of the UNM President and AD. So - cut back administration, and whatever else needs adjusted - or simply cut the sport if there is no desire to be competitive.

If I were your boss and spending recklessly, and it was time to negotiate your raise - I believe you would think it extremely poor optics if I told you no raise because I had already spent the money. Just saying . . .

Ray-Ray is in la-la land. His program has severely under performed the last few years and he is lucky to even still have a job for now.

If you knew the man at all, you would definitely not use the word classless to describe him. He is all about UNM and New Mexico. Is an awesome ambassador for this school and community.

You are la-la and can’t be taken seriously. While a Freshman packed team and key injuries lead to a sub-par season this past year - the Lobos won the MWC in 2017. That would be on top of also being champs in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016. Ray was instrumental in raising 2.3 million for the new clubhouse - and that would be on top of also bringing about turf and lights for the field, and even now providing decent restroom facilities.

Please take your fakenews and ignorance elsewhere.

IMO. I feel that Birmingham should get a 3 year contract extension. However, his timing in asking for a raise is not good for the reasons stated by others- the athletic departments financial situation and coming off a year in which UNM was picked to finish first and finished at or near the bottom of the league. It isn't fair, but a lot in athletics is "what have you done for me lately".

The other question--and I have no idea what the answer is--"Will there be a Lobo baseball team in three years?"

Ray needs to stay period. He's a true blue New Mexican who bleeds for this state. Baseball is tough to recruit as a lot of signees go pro. I'm fine with a 3 year extension with a raise. We'll be back and fine. Lost some serious studs off the 2017 team and had a young team last year. I'm in.

Give him 3 yrs, add big $ to performance bonuses, raise of 20% in year 3 plus another extension if we win mwc or tourney in 2 of those 3 yrs.

Many time a pension is based in part on your three highest paid years. So it is understandable why he wants to stay three years at a higher rate of pay than he presently receives. It isn't so much what he will get paid the next three years but what he will be paid the rest of his life after he retires.

    Do contract employees get pensions?

If you recall Yvonne Sanchez was just a year or so short of retirement eligibility when she was canned. Not only did she work at UNM but also NMSU. She took a job with APS to fulfill the pension requirements. The pension probably only relates to the UNM portion of her salary and not things like shoe or radio contracts. I imagine that is why she just took the Assistant's job at Michigan this year.

Thanks for the explanation. Wondered why she took that APS job.
