That crap makes me so mad. A college basketball writer ought to understand what these terms mean.

Correct me if I'm mistaken. I thought I'd seen the last couple of years. When I see let's say the mid-major top 10. We're not in it. We're being all the Mountain West. I see N Iowa, Zags, Middle Tenn, etc....

Anywho, it's a solid article. I do agree, I dont care for the mid-major label. Plus the transfer thing. Weir really had no choice year one due to starting late, coupled with everyone leaving. I think in the future, sure we're gonna look at transfers, but ideally, hes gonna go with Freshman. Need to really heat up that Canadien pipeline.

I'm also looking forward to seeing how Harris, Hunter and Jefferson play.

In the end. Go Lobos. Keep making statements!!

The article also states that New Mexico will be able to compete with Nevada next year after their roster is somewhat depleted losing their seniors. I’m calling it now we will compete with Nevada for the title THIS year and be the favorite to win conference next year .

Depending on the writer, the Big East, A10, CUSA, and MW are sometimes considered mid majors and sometimes considered above that level. There are 32 D1 college basketball conferences, so if the MW is consistently in the top 10 then technically we shouldn't be considered a mid major. It doesn't bother me as much as some others, but I get their gripe.

No, we're not Power 5. The MW is the next step down, which would make it a major conference, not a mid-major. If you look at the average enrollment of each MW school, look at the money spent on athletics, and look at how competitive the conference is nationally as a whole, then compare it to, say, the CAA (where Zane is coming from), there's no comparison at all. There are more classifications than just power and mid-major. The term mid-major was coined to describe schools like Towson. There are also low-major schools/conferences. Classifying everything that isn't P5 as mid-major is lazy and it's not applicable to the reality of college hoops at all.

The final authority on this matter:

Mid-major is a term used in American NCAA Division I college sports, especially men's basketball, to refer to athletic conferences that are not among the so-called "Power Five conferences" (the ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, and SEC), the Big East, the American, the Atlantic 10, and the Mountain West. These conferences are sometimes referred to as "high majors" by comparison. The term "mid-major" was coined in 1977 by Jack Kvancz, head coach of Catholic University's men's basketball team.[1] Such a distinction is not officially acknowledged by the NCAA, nor does the NCAA use the terms "major" and "mid-major" to differentiate between Division I athletic conferences. It is considered offensive and derogatory by some fans and schools.

I have always been fine with the MW being called a mid-major conference. I think that's about how we sit among the competition. What I've struggled with is nearly every team that's not in a P5 conference being lumped together as mid-majors. Everyone from Gonzaga to Boise State to Texas Southern gets the label. If that's the case then what's a low or high major? It goes with big city bias and sometimes a lack of respect for any school that isn't perennial powerhouse.

In the big picture it doesn't really mean much IMO. But...... The more successful our team can be, the less it matters. Go Lobos.

Seems pretty simple to me. 32 conferences, I’ll round up to 33 for this example. Top 11 are high majors. The next 11 are mid majors, and the last 11 are low majors. The MWC is easily top 11, so as a conference we are easily a high major. Gonzaga is tricky. They are are a high major program in a mid major conference.

I especially love how this "authority on this matter" has a site disclaimer warning of possible biases and unverifiable information. LOL!
