    Jaquan Lyle Scoring Projection

    First Post Banner

If he is to average his projected 18.7 points he better be physically conditioned to Coach Weirs liking.

This is missing Anthony Mathis and includes Tajuan Agee and Isaiah Maurice.

The Lobos averaged 82 points a game last year. I expect that to go up with the increase in talent and with more players knowing the system. If I had to pick which player I expect to lead the team in scoring it would be Lyle, and 18.7 seems doable to me.

I guess Mathis has moved on. Last years leading scorer is no where to be found, which is pretty much BS to me in valuing the whole list. It is certainly obvious that the supposed stars of the conference will score more than others. In projecting Weir's teams I think it is damn difficult to know who will do what especially before a game is played. I do think that Jaquan, Carleton, Vance and quite possible Makauch along with Anthony should score, but others may surprise.

Projections like that are to sell papers and drive clicks. Given the turnover, and the style, such numbers are almost laughable at this point.

When a fundamental part of the philosophy is play fast, have 3 pt threats to open the floor, yet the best 3 pt shooter is absent? When the whole team is built around team, not self, and lots of subs in and out, but the PG has that big a slice of the pie?

I don't see a lot of stuff in that projection to dwell upon.

The fact that Mathis isn't there is an obvious mistake. I mean they list Agee and Vlad, and I don't believe they think Mathis will score less than them. This strikes me as more of an honest mistake than a slight.

    I will play! Let's see .....

Lobos have got all these very good 3pt shooters,
all those quick tall athletes that can run and finish at the rim,
a system that features a constant influx of fresh talented players coming in and out, at least 12 deep,
a system that rewards players for getting opponents to turnover the ball,
a team that can hit the boards with abandon without fear of foul trouble
along with Point Guards that are used to running the floor and distributing the ball on the fly in McGee and Drinnon
along with a coach that insists the game be played at a fast pace that takes advantage of the altitude
along with the return of a "Pit Crowd" wanting blood each game out

It becomes very easy for me to visualize this team averaging around 92 to 98 pts per game. Most teams on the schedule will not be able to play at the pace the Lobos will play at. Most will eventually succumb to exhaustion. Many of us saw it work during the Ellenberger Era minus the 3pt shot. We saw it work at times last season with a smaller team that did not have all the pieces or depth this next Lobo BB team does. I don't know who will lead this team in scoring. I can see 7 to 8 averaging double figures. Lobos may break the NCAA record for 3pt shots taken and 3pt shots made. Those shots will come easily once opponents face exhaustion in the second half of games. Paul Weir will easily find playing time for 10 to 12 in most games. I expect a number of blowouts as Weir pushes his team to keep getting better as they push to win games in the NCAA Tournament.

You had me until you said the Lobos may break the record for 3pt shots made. The record was set lest year by Villanova at 464. They needed 40 games to do it. Post season games do count for these kind of records. For context the Lobos made 367 threes last year, so almost 100 less. I do think we should best our total from last year which would give us a team record. I also wouldn't be surprised if we broke the team record for the MWC, even though I don't know what that is. But an NCAA record.....You're not just drinking cherry kool aid, you've got it spiked with something strong.

Not sure if I'm missing something... Anthony Mathis is on the list at 17.4 ppg.

To see just the scoring projection for Lobo players only, it reads as follows:

    1) Mathis = 17.4
    2) Lyle = 17.1
    3) Maluach = 11.2
    4) Jackson = 9.9
    5) Kuiper = 7.0
    6) Pinchuk = 4.6
    7) Ezzeddine = 4.3
    8) Manigault = 4.1
    9) McGee = 3.0
Total = 78.6 points per game

    Certainly, McGee will score more.
The numbers for Bragg, Percy & Drinnon are still missing.

Updated again. Lowered all the others. Can’t see McGee only scoring 2.2pts a game.

    Bragg 11.5pts 7rbs

I doubt PPG average matters much with Weir. Remember he starts players based on the number of deflections. Our leading scorer may not even start. We play as a team now so I would rather project the PPG of the fourth guy off the bench. He will average 3.5 ppg.

I needed a good laugh this morning, Brutus pass the Kool-Aid around I agree with you, Weir's players wants WINS and NCAA berth, they will make us PROUD..I expect during the season there will be 8 different players in double figures.. 5 fresh players playing hard for the entire game, different line-ups = TEAM...

In case you ever feel like the job you do on a daily basis is stupid, monotonous or like what you do doesn't matter, just remember, there is a guy who puts out scoring projections for college basketball in July.

I'm going to go out a limb and say that if collectively our transfers, as well as our returnees, combine to score at least 1.0 more than they give up on the other end, it will be a pretty good season for everyone involved.

Non scientifically, there are going to be a lot of games this season where teams have to decide they can't guard someone with one guy and that leaves one of our guys to have an enormous night.
