Can u say Dirk Nowitski? Long arms, looks like a finesse offensive player. Plays D with his arms not feet, relies on long arms to rebound instead of blocking out. However blocking out players half your size will run around him.
As a frosh, using 5 fouls and redirecting shots will be an asset, Neal will bring the mean streak out of him in due time!!!

LOL.....he is a frickin giant against those guys.

Not impressed but to be hoenst the video does little to showcase the guy..
Was nice to see a big man run the break and dish...Shaqish??!! lol
Does this mean we have missed out on Famous. Seems to be a better fit than Kirk.
On offense he needs to flash to the paint more often. he seemed to spend lots of time on the perimeter. Not an easy way to evaluate him given the circumstances. A truer test of his skills comes when he plays against D1 caliber and size opponents.

Last I heard Famous is still all about Seton Hall and he would like to stay close to home...which is back east. Latest news on him was about 2 weeks ago. From a blog website:
RECRUITING NOTES
***Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez and assistant Dermon Player joined Pittsburgh associate head coach Tommy Herrion to watch Jarrid Famous of Westchester Community College last night. WCC lost to TCI.
The 6-11 Famous is considering Seton Hall, Villanova, Missouri, St. John’s, Xavier, Houston and UConn.
Famous will sign in the spring and have two years of eligibility remaining.
“That’s my goal,” Famous said previously. “Wait to the spring, see how it goes.”

Good LOOPS, thanks.
I really hope SA y Coaching staff are going hit on Cobbins hard, KIRK would be real good, in-stater etc, Cobbins would be GREAT. Man , if Cobbins goes somewhere else close, a team we play, he will be schooling Kirk into a better D-1 player.
ahh heck, ether/ither would be a huge recruit. of couse.
another GW blabla.........................lol

Kirk doesn't assert himself much, stands around and does not work to get open at all , he needs to move without the ball to open himself up more, seems to like to stand just outside the lane and hope! With his size and athletic moves, which he showed too rarely, he should be featured. He makes himself too easy to guard by just waiting around. He looks like he lacks energy and has no jump in him, been big too long, good 6'6" can guard him easily. I had great hopes for him, but he needs to build himself up and "JUMP and MOVE" !!!

MIKE , the videos I saw of him were much more of an inside board hog, blocker, taking up more space, bigger than Will n AJ, Ross feels he's still growing too, see's him as an 4 and an easy 5, and his all around stats are phenomenal, a real monster. Kirk is a 5 all the way, but a 6-11 fenom vs a 7 foot good shooting center is a tuff call.
Cobbins has a foot more abilities than Will y AJ.............just mio,,I'm a die hard fan of Ross's guys. aka Faris. It's good to have choices, the 2 are different but can fill theb needed spot. I'lltry n get some more stats and info on Cobbins. Gras.
Cobbins is certainly more athletic, but he's a rail right now. He needs to add major weight for DI. He wouldn't take up more space than AJ or Will at this level right now. Also, like Kirk, he is much taller than most of his competition and isn't going up against the greatest competition there in the TX panhandle. That said, he is dominating there like he should, so that is good.
I would take both if we could get them (we need all the size we can get), but the scholarships are limited and the staff likes Kirk's skill and sees the need for a legit 5, not a possible 5.

Yes, I wanted the 9 minutes of my life back. Dirk Nowitski was a perfect analogy. He looked big, slow, white, and soft to me. If you have that size particularly against 6.3 guys that are guarding you, dont you have to bull your way to the middle post up and hit 3 foot turnaround? All I say was standing around on the outside and taking 10 foot jumpers. And I saw him move over too late on defense more than once. Hes a project for sure.
Very good hands and handles for a big guy. Reasonably quick feet when he decides to move. Should post up more (don't know if that is his choice or what he is being told to do). Not bad hops when he decides to jump. Not strong but is young. Has real long arms & good shot motion for a big guy. not nearly aggressive enough.
I watched the cobbins and kirk videos back to back. For me there is no question. Cobbins is the guy I would want. The main difference is versatility. Cobbins will be able to play in the half court or in transition. Kirk just looks too slow to factor into anything other than a half court slow down game. Plus to me Cobbins seemed to bring a lot of energy to the court, Kirk meanwhile seemed uninspired.
He's not as bad as Daniel Santiago was in high school...
Decent speed for a big guy but terrible conditioning (I'll blame that on the coach).
Coaches know better than I. If they like him so be it.
G,
sorry I posted this on another thread.
One can never really predict height. I can tell you, he has grown over 1 inch since October. He is only 16 year's old, so he could potentially add another 1-3 inches. He was measured this week at just under 6'9", with shoes he's at about 6'8 3/4. He is so versatile as you see in the video that he can play multiple positions legitimately, 3, 4 & 5. He weighs 210-215 (hardly rail thin although he will need to put on more weight for the next level) now so for him to add another 20-25 pounds over the next couple of years, with his frame, it's definitely not a stretch. He's not 6'9", 180 lbs.
He's filling in and he's already a strong kid. He's only going to get bigger and stronger. He's got the skill and athleticism and his upside/potential is greater than that of any player in NM and most players from around the country. He's a definite high major and with continued growth and development a potential top 30 player in the country and possible NBA player. He's a great kid, a hard worker, has excellent character, teachable, yes sir, no sir type, and a 4.0+ gpa student.
LoboMike is right when he says UNM looks at Mike different than Kirk positionally. I believe they would like to get both and use Mike more at the 4, possibly some 3 & 5 with Kirk being more of a 5. That said, Daniel has been out of position his entire time at UNM and he has more than held his own against legitimate 5's at 6'10, 6'11, 7'2", etc. Mike is excellent in transition and in the half court.

Thank you Ross, great info, I really like this young man and his potential, knowing his attitude and school work ethics, make me like like him even more, the type that fits perfectly in the SA system.
Gracias again

You are right about an ongoing game film(Kirk) VS. highlight film for Cobbins, the problem for Kirk is that game film put him in a poor situation against what Alford does in his game type of play, lots of fast play and pushing the ball down court. He would spend most of his time in late transition against either end of the court. He did have bright spots and seem to have a good burst of speed when he wants it, but he did not as someone else said show much inspiration.
Now to Cobbins, his highlight film was very good and very aggressive also, even though he easily overpowers shorter players. I loved his hops and attitude!
Both could serve us very well, but Kirk would have to really work on his aggressiveness and desire. Also I like that both are either from New Mexico or Amarillo where we need to get those players and keep them in the area, UNM not T Tech!
