Thursday 18 September 2008 Answers, or more questions?
I am past the withdrawal stage and fully into seizures! I can't wait to see how the younger players have developed over the summer. Angela & Amy are known commodities and will obviously start barring injury or something unexpected. After that, I don't think anything is set.
The questions I want to see answers to:
WHO IS THE 4?
How much has Jessica improved? Is she going to grab the other post spot along with Angela? If so, we have a physically strong front line but not a lot of quickness or speed. That would be a very different look than....
Kelsey or Porsche develop enough to start at the 4 and keep Angela at the 5. Porsche's D was good enough to get her some key minutes late in games at the end of the season. Her offense isn't any worse than Timi's when she started. Kelsey is the mirror image, much better offensively than Porsche but not as good on D. I LOVE her aggressiveness on the offensive boards. Either of these starting makes us faster. It also means that When the other two posts come in there is less of a need to change our style since we would still have one strong post and one quick post. Personally, I hope Kelsey wins the start. I think she has the most up-side of the freshmen last year, and it will take us one step closer to running more. I have great images of her being a beast on the O-boards and in fast break situations. HOW MUCH TIME CAN NIKKI EARN?
Will we finally have a second point guard Coach trusts? If Nikki can earn 10 min a game this will be a very good team. If she can efficiently spell Amy for 15 mins a game (unlikely Coach will cut Amy's time that much, but if Nikki plays well enough to FORCE it) then we will be a very good team.
WILL WE RUN MORE, FINALLY?
We will never be a fast break first team but I assume either Geronika or Amanda B. will see a lot of time at the 2 spot. Both can handle the ball well enough to bring it up under pressure and both were more inclined to push the tempo. I think part of this was not having a trusted second PG and having to "pace" Amy. Either way we should have the opportunity to get out and run more often if they are allowed to. Brandi never looked comfortable bringing the ball up semi-regularly. I can see Amy/Geronika or Amy/Amanda being more like Katie/Julie. It should also make it more difficult for the SDSU-like teams to press us. WHO WILL BE THE GO-TO SCORER?
We haven't had to ask this question in a long time. Jordan to Lindsey, Abby to Dionne. Now? I see several who have the ability, but until it's in game changing moments, we don't know. Today's wild guess at a starting line-up, subject to LOTS of changing of the mind: MOST LIKELY GAME 1:
1. Amy.
2. Amanda B. (Geronika should push very hard once she's out of the dog house)
3. Amanda A. (Without Eileen's foot problems I'd call it a toss-up)
4. Angela
5. Acissej (she will be forced to write her name backwards if she wants to start)
