The Notre Dame Irish handed the New Mexico Lobos a 66-14 road loss on Saturday afternoon. While the home team went into a 2-0 record, the Lobos dropped to 1-1. The Irish scored the most points they have in a home opener since 1932.

“Our team kind of found itself a little bit today. We had been looking to go into a second week here and put the pieces together. I think they started to fall together for us today,” said Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelley. “You saw a number of players on the offensive side of the ball have significant roles on what we did offensively. That’s what we were expecting to happen today and it came to fruition.” Continue reading “Lobos fall 66-14 to Notre Dame on the road”

Tuitele and the Lobos prepare for Notre Dame experience

The odds are not in New Mexico’s favor as the Lobos head to South Bend, Indiana this weekend, but the second game of the 2018 season should provide a lot of experience and insight to a team that head coach Bob Davie described as one of the youngest ones he’s had.

While this is the first time ever the two schools face each other, Notre Dame is a school that Davie is quite familiar with. He was the interim head coach for a couple games there in 1995. Davie eventually went from defensive coordinator to full-time head coach in 1997 (after Lou Holtz stepped down) staying with the Irish until 2001. However, Davie won’t be making the trip as he continues to recover from a medical condition. Offensive line coach Saga Tuitele will be leading the Lobos as the acting head coach this weekend.

“We can’t be over our heads on anything… we can’t be too much in awe,” said Tuitele when he talked about playing against a high profile school. Continue reading “Tuitele and the Lobos prepare for Notre Dame experience”

Update on Bob Davie

New Mexico football head coach Bob Davie was taken to the hospital immediately after the Lobos’ season opener on Saturday. The official statement released by Athletic Director Eddie Nuñez said it appeared to be a “serious medical incident.”

Fortunately, on Sept. 1, the school released a statement from Davie thanking everyone for their support and that he anticipates a full recovery. The coach was able to meet with the team on Thursday Sept. 5, proving he was already doing better. However, Davie also made it clear that he is not going to push himself too much too soon. New Mexico opens 2019 football season against Sam Houston State

Football season is here and the New Mexico Lobos are only a couple days away from officially kicking off  2019 campaign by hosting the Sam Houston State Bearkats on Saturday afternoon.

SHSU is 3-28 all-time when playing against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents. One of the Bearkats’ three wins was against UNM in 2011. The game was played in Albuquerque, and the away team left the land of enchantment with a 48-45 overtime victory. Continue reading “New Mexico opens 2019 football season against Sam Houston State”

Q&A with Bob Davie: One Week Until Kickoff

Joe Auletta & Isabel Gonzalez

With the Lobos opening their 2019 fall season next Saturday Aug. 31, New Mexico football head coach Bob Davie didn’t share much on what to specifically look for on the field. He did however, talk about the positive attitude he notices on the roster and how much physical preparation this offseason has seen.

You have about a week before your first game. How is the team feeling right now?

You realize how long they have been out there, you realize how much they have invested in this. I will say this, this is in some ways the youngest teams I’ve had, but it’s probably the most motivated team that has truly invested the most hard work. We had three 80-play scrimmages. We had an impromptu 40-play scrimmage. I’ve never had a team that put as much physical preparation into this. We have to because we are extremely young. None of us know how it will go exactly, that’s why this it is such a great game. But I can honestly say this team has done everything we’ve asked and has been such a pleasure to be around.
