Denver resume not impressive.  Beat the Flygirls but lost to CSU, Wyoming and NMSU

http://warrennolan.com/basketballw/2019/schedule/Denver

Because they are the like #16 seed, so one of 4 worst teams in the WNIT, but thanks for degrading our first opponent...

"IF" they are seeded like the NCAA tourney, then LMU and Idaho would be the 8/9 seeds.  WY seems to have a tougher schedule with N. CO and possibly Lamar in round 2.  However, their S16 match-up could be favorable.

"IF" both us and WY can play each game up to our capabilities, it appears a collision course for game #3 between us.  However, it's post season, so who knows how things will play out.

I hope coach and team have had enough practices by now to work out the kinks on how they will adjust the line-up and rotation for Aisia's absence.  Hopefully, we will go deeper into the bench and I hope they can step up and show they need more minutes.

or we could have a rematch with FSU and if we won that, a rematch with WY.

Seems the southeast/midwest bracket is a bit more loaded, so any team advancing from that will be formidable.

I hope we can get on a win streak and keep advancing, this seems like a well set-up tourney for us.  Could we get 8-10k in attendance if we get to the Final Four?  I would love to see that. 😍    A lot of work ahead to make that happen... 👍

Denver beat South Dakota in the Summit conference which is a team that beat 3 top 25 teams so they may be better than you think.

Saw just a little of them on Altitude.  Some nice length.  Good 3pt%, 39%.  Averaged 80 points a game.  If they get hot from 3 can be dangerous.   Beat South Dakota by 5 in Denver 104-99.  Went 12-21 on 3's that game.  Lost by 15 at South Dakota, 7-25 on 3's.  So need to guard their shooters.  Pretty good post player in Courtney Smith.  If both teams hot, could be a high scoring game.

There are only 29 automatic qualifiers because the Pac-12, SEC, and ACC teams declined. As far as I can tell the following seven teams declined invitations.

40 Utah (declined PAC-12 AQ)
61 Ga Tech (declined ACC AQ)
62 Georgia (declined SEC AQ)
41 USC (declined)
57 Purdue (declined)
60 LSU (declined)
65 Duke (declined)

Some highlights from one game.  Looks like they like to go backdoor, some screen and roll action.

Hannah‘s team played Denver twice this year. We lost the first one at their place, with both teams over 100 points. They can hit from three very easily. But if you face guard them, they are stoppable. For us in that game, it was a matter of not being prepared as it was the first game of the season. In the second game, at our place, we handled them pretty easily. We shut down their three point shooters and spread the ball inside to Hannah and outside to Ciara, and it was a fun game to watch.

AZ is in the Pac.  Not sure who was the third conference that turned them down.

But they weren't the automatic qualifier. Apparently if the AQ team turns down the bid, any other teams in that conference have to get at-large bids.

I'm pretty sure it follows the conference seeding practice after eliminating those going to other tournaments.  If #2 doesn't want it the AQ goes to #3 on down the line until someone accepts.

Well, according to the official WNIT list of teams, the Pac-12, ACC, and SEC don't have anyone listed under automatic qualifiers. The P5 automatic qualifiers by rule were Ohio State (Big TEN), West Virginia (Big12), Utah (Pac12), Ga Tech (ACC), and Georgia (SEC). But apparently the latter three declined.

Arizona (Pac-12), Arkansas (SEC), and Va Tech (ACC) all accepted bids but are listed as at-large teams. To me, that says that the WNIT doesn't feel obligated to hand out automatic bids to conferences that snub them. But they are willing to give other teams from those conferences a chance to play based on merit alone. If a smaller conference team snubbed them, I would imagine that the WNIT committee wouldn't offer a slot to the next team in line if their RPI didn't merit one. But I may be wrong.

My bad I thought I had seen AZ as an AQ, should have went back and checked.

The WNIT Rule...

  1. Should a conference's automatic qualifier team decline the WNIT invitation, then the conference forfeits its AQ spot and that berth goes into the at-large pool.

Utah was the automatic qualifier for the PAC, but they are severely hampered by injuries and down to seven players. Therefore they decided to not accep a bid to the NIT.

Only two MWC teams are left in the post-season. Wyoming hosts South Alabama at 2:00p Sunday on the MW Network. Utah State plays at North Texas Tuesday at 6:00p.
